Description: Having dramatically misjudged their audience's loyalty to skewed, art-damaged heavy metal, the Smashing Pumpkins called it a day shortly after the release of 2000's low-grossing
Machina/The Machines of God. Three years later, frontman Billy Corgan returns with an all-star team of mostly Chicago indie rockers at his side, including Slint/Tortoise guitarist Dave Pajo, Skunk guitarist Matt Sweeney, A Perfect Circle bassist Paz Lenchantin, and fellow Pumpkin Jimmy Chamberlain on drums. But Zwan has not blunted the singer's flamboyant edge. His bonkers vocal gymnastics and whisper-to-a-scream choruses remain at the black heart of
Mary Star of the Sea, as the group works its way through the rich melodies of new classics like "Honestly" and "Endless Summer," and pleasingly shifts into downtempo mood on the gorgeous "Of a Broken Heart" and gripping "Desire." And while Corgan's tendency toward self-indulgence results in the tedious 14-minute "Jesus, I/Mary Star of the Sea," it is just a minor lapse considering the rest of the big, glamorous rock on display here.

Reviews:
Corgan's Ode to Joy
Billy Corgan and the rest of Zwan are able to articulate a kind of spiritual, optimistic, authenticity with their music that is absolutely powerful. There is such a sense of joy and yet genuine expression that the band is able to convince one of. If you have a spiritual bone in your body, this album will move you. And not in the way that U2's "The Joshua Tree" does but in the way that George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" does. It is a testament to love and joy and the essence of rock and roll expression.
Damn Near PERFECT ALBUM. ROT PUMPKINS ROT
Billy has moved on. Unfortunately, a lot of Pumpkins fans cannot. They are stuck in their lame 90's warp. Corgan went on to write more sweeter and humbler material that shows a progression and status of where in life he's at. The best songs: Yeah, Come With Me, Honestly, and Heartsong. I gave this 5 stars but the Jesus I track should have been edited some instead of the full 14 minutes. With the breakup of the short-lived band, thankfully I plenty of bootlegs to last me. :D
Not for all Pumpkins fans
Corgan said it himself, this band would not be a continuation of The Smashing Pumpkins. With that said, Zwan's debut is strong enough and different enough to stand on it's own. Being a long time Pumpkins fan it took me almost a year to get into Zwan. It is different from the Pumpkins in every way possible and I love it. Unlike in his past work, Corgan has an upbeat, almost cheerful attitude and outlook on life. Although for some of us this might not seem overly appealing, it eventually grows on you. The brightest points on the album are 'Honestly', 'Baby Let's Rock!', 'Yeah!' and 'Desire'. The only dull part of the album I felt was the title track. If you don't fall in love with Zwan after your first few listens, KEEP LISTENING. It really is a shame this band was so short lived. But, hey, we have a Corgan solo album to look forward to.
