An enjoyable piece of work
Eclipse is Yngwie Malmsteen's fifth full-length album. It was released in 1990. There are 11 tracks. Of these 11 tracks, there is a power ballad--"Save Our Love"--and an instrumental, "Eclipse." The material is in a straight-ahead hard rock musical direction. Altogether, I find the album's songwriting to be pleasing, the musicianship to be skillful, and the sound quality to be gratifying. Throughout, Malmsteen's guitar work is proficient. I admire Goran Edman's singing. And I also enjoy Mats Olausson's skilled keyboard playing. A nice job is done on the album's backing vocals, too. My favorite compositions are "Making Love," "Save Our Love," "Devil in Disguise," "What Do You Want," "Faultline," and "Eclipse." The elegant "Making Love" features smooth vocals from Edman and engaging, atmospheric background vocals. The well-written, pretty power ballad "Save Our Love" exhibits an attractive beginning, singing from Edman that is plaintive, poignant, and inspired, a notable, touching refrain, and a guitar solo from Malmsteen that is charming and heartfelt. The nicely tailored, gothic "Devil in Disguise" is an epic-sounding piece that presents a memorable chorus and an impressive, medieval ending. The stately song "What Do You Want" displays captivating, ambitious vocals from Edman, a noteworthy refrain, and pleasant keyboard work from Olausson; I especially like Olausson's keyboard stabs during the intro. "Faultine" sports a cool beginning that is creative and sophisticated and lustrous, infectious guitar playing from Malmsteen on the chorus. The dynamic, regal instrumental "Eclipse" features remarkable guitar work from Malmsteen. The CD insert includes the song lyrics, a black-and-white photo of Malmsteen posed with his guitar, and another black-and-white photo of Malmsteen with the rest of his band. Also, there is a color photo of Malmsteen posed with his guitar on the back of the CD jewel case. The disc is just over 49 minutes. The album cover is cool. Eclipse is a majestic, industrious album with finesse, and I recommend it.
good vocals...half hearted attempt at new direction
A few the songs are in a somewhat listenable new direction (bluesy/pop) for Yngwie, but the rest are the same old awful, thumping, screaming medieval crap he is, unfortunately, infamous for.
...if I want neoclassical/instumental, I'd buy Vinnie Moore or Tony MacAlpine, etc.
Yngwie's Chubby Force is on the Rise!
This is officaly for me the last Yngwie album that was decent.Every album Yngwie did between 1981-1989, was a masterpiece. This album Eclipse pales in comparison to his others of the 80's.There is only 3 good songs on here, and even they are pale when compared to his past songs he did. If you are just starting to buy Yngwie albums, start with Steeler, Trilogy, Odyssey or Marching Out instead of this album.
1.Making Love(10/10) Best song on this album.Yngwie shreds some good work here with good vocals.
2.Bedroom Eyes(5/10)Not horrible,but far from being a gem!
3.Save our Love(5/10)Ballad sounding song of this album. The intro is good, but it's downhill from that.
4.Motherless Child(4/10)A lot of shredding on this one,but lack more feeling of that great 80's sound Yngwie had!
5.Devil in Disguise(5/10)Remember the movie Phantasm from 1979? Listen to the acoustic guitar intro.I think it sounds like Yngwie ripped off the Phantasm song them, which was constantly played in that movie!
6.Judas(6/10)The keyboards sound good here, but nothing too special about this one.
7.What do you Want(10/10)Now here is a highpoint.Has that 80's sound within the keyboards and guitar.Sounds good. This tune has a good chorus lineto go with it.
8.Demon Driver(6/10)Not too good!
9.Faultline(5/10)the guiatr work is good here!
10.see you in Hell(3/10)Bad song!
11.Elipse(8/10)Closing instrumental.Pretty good.Guitar players might want to take note with this one.
If you want to collect Yngwie, but don't know which album should be the cut off, well this is the one.Get this and any other Yngwie album before 1990 and you will have everything worth owning.
A persoanl note, I saw Yngwie Malmsteen live last year and I have to say he is not what he used to be.He played no songs at all from any of his albums from the 1980's.So if your an 80's Yngwie fan and have the urge to see him when he tours again, beware because I don't think he likes to play his 80's stuff anymore for some stupid egomaniac reason!
Yngwie 80's work was the only good stuff he ever did!
