Alas, I can't root for Whitney any longer.
For the past several years I've stood by Whitney's music even though in my mind I knew she had given up her seat at the throne after The Bodyguard. Because I was such a HUGE fan of her voice and persona and charisma, I consistently told friends and family that she was "back" with each release since. I just can't anymore.
Whitney's voice is completely gone -- years of smoking and drug abuse have shriveled her vocal cords. Most of the songs are sheer agony. I actually have to turn the CD off when "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is on. She's not singing -- she's shrieking. It's horrible.
Vocally, she manages to butcher every song. You can completely tell that she's trying so hard to hit the notes that were so easy to hit just 10 years ago. And the cheesy R&B background music helps you realize that she doesn't care anymore and has just given up completely on being a world-class singer.
And is there really a need for Bobbi Kristina to lend her vocal stylings to the CD? I guess singing is a family-affair now with Whitney. I'm just sick of seeing/hearing Bobby and Bobbi. I mean, it's comical and makes you feel sad for them. How long can they try to ride mommy's ever-shriveling coat tails (or vocal cords)?
My one star is for "Joy To The World" at the end of the CD -- from The Preacher's Wife (back when she could sing).
Bottom line... don't waste your money. She can't sing anymore. There's nothing Clive Davis can do to save her. She's done.
medicore, a solid album, however not the whitney we knew
Ill start off by saying Whitney has always been, despite her personal conflicts, my favorite singer of all time. However i was forced(and trust me it hurt) to rate this album only 4 stars. And although 4 stars may seem "good", in whitney's case its a disgrace. Whitney sounds just plain good on the album, and good is not usually a word that we associate with Whitney Houston. Her voice doesnt soar with the angelic majesty weve come to appreciate tremendously over the years, however her god given talent is clearly exhibited, and unmistakable. I bought this album and although a little dissapointed, if i could go back i would still buy it cause im a whitney die hard and thats what we die hards do. Ill admit in comparison to another one of my top favorite vocalists (mariah carey) and her christmas album, this album falters. But like an earlier review stated its an unfair comparison considering Mariah was in her vocal prime when she made her christmas album. Surely if Whitney decided to make a christmas album back in her prime, it would have undoubtedly surpassed Mariahs. My final analysis is if u want a solid christmas album then purchase it, However solid is where it ends so if ur expecting Whitney signature voice to be present on this album, then u will be let down.
This is not good
Her powerful voice is gone and her mega hits too. I wonder why she took all these drugs and DID NOT STOP in time. Now it's too late she's gone and will NEVER come back. Retire Whitney because now I don't wanna hear your voice anymore. The songs are okay but the magical voice is gone. Please stop now before it gets VERY VERY clear that you can't sing anymore and looks like an 65 year old man. The truth hurts I know.
