Reviews:
What's up with this album?
I am a big fan of the White Stripes, and will remain one, however, I don't know what happened on this one. Actually, De Stijl was the first of their CD's I purchased, and I loved it, so I bought White Stripes. To be honest, I don't think this disc has a single sane-written song on it. The whole thing is just blastig out guitar on every track, making them all sound the same. It's a shame that the White Stripes had to give in to cheap not-like-their-music-loud-punk-rock for their debut. I know lot's of people like that sort of thing, but this CD just seemed kind of disappointing campared to other White Stripes albums.
Great Debut by the greatest mainstream group of the 2000s
I initially didn't really care for this album and thought all the tracks sounded the same, but after a few more listens I really got into this album, although I still prefer De Stijl or Elephant to this album. There are some classics on this cd as well, like The Big Three Killed My Baby, Stop Breakin' Down, I Fought Piranhas, Wasting My Time, Astro, Suzy Lee, Jimmy the Exploder, and Sugar Never Tasted So Good. That's nine songs and I probably forgot some other ones, but overall a very solid album.
This is accualy 4.5 stars...
The White Stripes first album is their second best, only being surpassed by De Stijl.
For me, this album has serious staying power. It's really the only White Stripes album I still listen to (and De Stijl). Usually when I buy an album I listen to the song(s) that I'm familliar with, and maybe the first one or two. Then about 2 months later I begin to listen to the rest of the album. When I bought this album, I didn't know any of the songs, I only really bought it to own all of the White Stripes albums, so I didn't really have anything to listen to when I bought it. So I listened to the whole thing the first time I listened to it. That was the first time I did that, and the last, not because I just didn't bother to, but because I couldn't swallow it. This album is just too irrisistable.
My personal favourites are Stop Breaking Down, A GREAT Robert Johnson cover; Cannon, with a great guitar riff and a nice section with some Son House lyrics; Astro, the only tune that I am forced to sing along to; Do, with some of the White Stripes best lyrics; Screwdriver, the single best guitar on the album and St. James Infirmary Blues, I don't know why I like this song so much, I guess I really like the piano in it; It's one of their best songs.
People complain about it being one in about 10,000 garage rock revival bands (and I could name about 3/4 of them), and Meg's drumming, I say if it sounds good, who cares? And people complain about Jack's vocals and repetivness and I say that you can have your opinion, but you are probably outnumebered about 100 to 1 on this one.
The reason I am deducting half a star is because of the pointless and boring songs: Slicker Drips and Little People. I don't see why the included these songs. They sound like B-Sides for B-Sides.
