Reviews:
Bluesy. I like it!
Personally this is even better then any of their other albums. They are a very hard band to figure out. Their 1st album seemed to have a lot of punk rock kind of songs. Now this album is unmistakenly blues mixed with a little bit of rock. Perfect combo. Most talented band of the 21st century.
Great CD
A Great CD. Jack White has mastered the art of different singing and preforming techniques, while Meg White has a mostly subtle part. In De Stijl, Blues, Folk, Rock, and other styles are fused into one CD. It surprised me how different these songs are at first, but the more they are listened to the more enjoyable they become. His lyrics are not the greatest compared to those of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, etc. But, in favor of his part he adopted some song lyrics from other artists(such as "Your Southern Can Is Mine) . Fortunately, his guitar mastery makes any song you listen to of his enjoyable.
Rock, Old School - 4.5 Stars
For a two person band, this may be as good as it gets. For a modern band, this may be as good as it gets.
Recorded on decades old equipment, this album sounds just out of the 60s. The style resembles some of the bands of that period, especially the first Stones-esque song.
Most of the songs are short to medium length - with three tracks under 2-min and only two over 4-min.
If you listen to the 30-sec samples from Amazon, this is a very good indication of what the album sounds like. The first six tracks are all excellent, and are certainly deserving of making this a 5-star product. After the first six though, it does slow down. Rest assured they are not bad tracks, but a couple of them sound similar and make the CD a little less valuable to me. The seventh track, "Sister, Do You Know My Name?", is the low-point of the CD, and is followed up by a better, albeit somewhat-similar sounding track. Track Nine follows this slow pattern, and clocking in at over 4-min makes you forget about the tremendous first six tracks. Tracks Ten, Twelve, and Thirteen pick it back up though and are enough to give the CD a 4.5-star rating that I am forced to round up to five.
The fact is, Jack White's guitar playing is absolutely wonderful throughout most of this CD. There are also plenty of catchy and entertaining songs to accent this. If you don't mind a few fillers, buy this CD. It definitely ranks within my top tier of CDs from any time period.
The 30-sec samples are key!
