Description: Former Coen brothers cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld has carved out a nice, if unlikely, niche as one of the '90s most consistently succesful directors (The Addams Family, Get Shorty), and the megahit alien spoof Men in Black only enhanced that reputation. The film's quirky MIB orchestral score by Danny Elfman is represented here by just two cuts; the feel-good hip-hop grooves of star Will Smith, Snoop Doggy Dogg, A Tribe Called Qwest, and others that take center stage instead. Still, a more convincing argument for "positive rap" would be hard to imagine. --Jerry McCulley

Reviews:

My favorite film soundtrack.

Here's what I think. There are bad, medium, good, and brilliant tracks on this CD.

BAD: Will Smith (thinks he's CL Smooth. He's not.)
3T (boring)
Trey Lorenz (boring)
Emoja (what are they? V. boring)
Ginuwine (slow, boring, no point)
Buckshot Lafonque (sub big-beat)
Danny Elfman (sorry...classical sucks)

MEDIUM: Snoop Doggy Dogg (kind of OK)
Nas (not bad, but not Illmatic)

GOOD: Alicia Keys (like one of the long slow ones off her album)
De La Soul (relaxed beat, nice piano, funny rhmes)
Tribe Called Quest (like something off Beats,Rhymes+ Life)

BRILLIANT: Roots (chilled out, great rapping, amazing piano)
Destiny's Child (best song on the CD. singer sounds like shes been crying, delicate guitar, great song.)

For a CD with so much filler, I listen to it a lot, because even the terrible stuff is well studio produced. The films quite good too, if you forget your not a kid anymore.

Pointless

This album is pointless. Only three tracks are from the movie proper, and two of those are available on the *actual* soundtrack.

Don't waste your time with this imitation--go get the Elfman album instead.

Underrated Soundtrack! Not Great But Not Bad Either!

Men In Black, like most soundtracks these days, only has maybe a few related songs to the movie. The rest are just fillers. Still, it isn't too bad. In my view, Will Smith's original "Men In Black" song will always be the theme to me (didn't care for the one he made for the second film). I also liked the debuts of Alicia Keys and Destiny's Child as well. DC pretty much showed what was to come later. Alicia's showed off her musical skills but not her voice so it was a surprise that she came correct as she did later on.

The rest of the songs were okay but the Snoop Dogg/JT song "Get Down On It" stands out as well as The Roots/D'Angelo song. Wouldn't pay full price for it but I'd buy it at a reduced price.
