Description: The second volume in Rhino's series of Cajun and zydeco music compilations, this collection includes 18 cuts by Terrance Simien & The Mallet Playboys, Nathan Abshire, The Balfa Brothers, Queen Ida, Clifton Chenier, Boozoo Chavis, Beausoleil, and 10 others. Stylistically, this disc covers everything from the Balfa Brothers worthy stab at the Cajun national anthem, "Jolie blond" and D.L. Menard's traditional "The Back Door" to Clifton Chenier's cover of Louis Jordan's joyous "Choo Choo Ch-Boogie" and Rockin' Dopsie's spirited reading of Professor Longhair's "Mardi Gras in New Orleans." More fun than definitive, this is another intelligently selected installment in a very worthy series. --Robert Baird

Reviews:

Another Gem from the Vaults at Rhino

I get the feeling that my dream job would be to work at Rhino Records. ALLIGATOR STOMP VOL. II is yet another of the great compilations and anthologies put together by the Rhino folks. They have assembled a great cross-section of Cajun classics. I can't say that it is definitive, but it's sure a great time. Play this at your next BBQ or party and I can guarantee smiles on everyone's faces and questions about the artists that are recorded here.

Go Go Zydeco

I was turned onto this series of recordings after finding one in a grab-bag of CDs purchased off of eBay. After being exposed to Rockin' Sidney's 'My Toot-Toot' in my earlier days, I was anxious to hear more upbeat Zydeco music. This album hit the spot. Recording quality leaves a bit to be desired, with some lo-fidelity moments here and there. Overall listenability, however, is good. Put this on whilst driving to work and you'll be in a better mood upon arrival!

The Best of the Alligators

Another fine compilation by Rhino, mixing in the obvious classics with some hard to find gems. The rare recording of the Balfa's "Jolie Blonde" alone is worth the price.
