All The Best From France: 40 French Favorites [2-CD SET]

Description: Leave it to the French to show their cosmopolitan side with this wide-ranging double CD that often resembles a whirlwind package tour of Paris. The first disc contains everything from a Francophone version of the pop bolero "What Now My Love" to a jazz medley of children's songs including "Frère Jacques" and "Alouette." The Paris of movie soundtracks flickers to life as a chanteuse huskily emotes "L'Amour des Poètes" or nostalgically evokes "Moulin Rouge," while a melancholy brass section introduces Cole Porter's "I Love Paris." Disc 2 moves us into the historic district as a spritely accordion combo makes a less extravagant and downright pleasing presentation of the Gallic soul. "La Valse des As" is an especially impressive demonstration of the accordionist's art with lightning fingerwork that tickles away the cobwebs. All in all, it's a spectacularly fun, occasionally chuckle-inducing collection well worth the ridiculously low price. --Bob Tarte
