Tracklist of A Twist of Motown
Reviews:
Gentle, smooth and urban
There are some spectacular musicians who create a smorgasboard of sounds on these tracks that don't compete or shake the rafters but blend and compliment one another in a gentle unassuming way. It has some urban appeal (try "War") but is mostly a smooth jazz sound (try "Creepin" by Bob James). The most pronounced Motown influence seems to be Stevie Wonder's harmonica sound but there's no real rhythmic or melody diversion from the original recordings. Motown gets wonderful respect here with layers of instruments and arrangements that have depth and personality.
There is no way anyone who loves music could appreciate the creativity in this cd without a list of the awesome musicians who melded the sounds together. My most memorable tracks include almost all of them: "Got to Be There" melodic guitar by Peter White; "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" soulful trumpet by Chris Botti; "War/What's Going On?" urban sax by Mindi Abair; "The Tracks of My Tears" vocals by Brenda Russell; "Just My Imagination" vocals by Will Downing; "Never Can Say Goodbye" guitar by Lee Ritenour and "Creepin'" keyboards by Bob James.
George Benson, Dave Grusin, Gerald Albright and Richard Elliot also contribute to the instrumental wonderland of sounds. It's just a very lovely collection of tracks from a generation of fabulous Motown music with timelss momentum.
Get you moving classics!
I was looking for some up beat contemporary jazz to add to my collection. While overall, this CD was slightly more mellow than I expected, it definitely did not disappoint. I just LOVE the arrangement of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" and "You Haven't Done Nothin" are fast becoming favorites. Lee Ritenour and the gang have done a great job of jazzing up these old favorites, and still allowing the feel created by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the others come through.
Add this CD to your collection, give it a spin, and feel the groove. It has definitely made the favorites list in my collection.
So good its bad , top musicians, good motown sound.
I think everyone is so tired of the rap crap out there that no one is paying attention to this masterpiece. However,if you have the courage to buy this cd you will never forget that you live in the most blessed and gifted country in the world. The best collection of music money can buy period.
