Reviews:

Found it at long last: "Signs" by Five Man Electrical Band

Except for Maureen McGovern's "Morning After" and Sammy Davis Jr.'s "Candy Man," which was #1 in 1972, none of the nine songs collected on this album made it to the top, so I have no idea what the title "#1 Radio Hits of the 70's" is supposed to signify beyond marketing hyperbole. If there is a common denominator to this album, which brings together Lou Rawls' "Natural Man" and Bobby "Boris" Pickett's "Monster Mash," it is beyond my reckoning.

Anyhow, there is only one thing that recommends this album and that is the one hit wonders Five Man Electrical Band doing "Signs." You remember. The song that begins:

And the sign said "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do"
So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that. Huh! Me workin' for you!"
Whoa-oh-oh

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

You young folks might be familiar with the live cover version by Telsa, but I prefer the original and this is the first place I have found it (I need it for the massive Folk Rock collection that I am putting together). I have fond memories of this song and I know I am not alone. There are very few songs that I have been trying to add to my music library where I would pick up an entire album, regardless of what else was on it, and "Signs" is one of them. In this regard, I bet I am not alone.
