Reviews:
4.5 stars - I shouldn't have to tell you this is a good one
No Heavy Petting (1976.) UFO's fifth album.
The arrival of Michael Schenker into UFO's formaiton in 1973 caused the band to almost instantaneously improve. Along with the vocals of the legendary Phil Mogg, the band's rise in quality and popularity seemed to be a never-ending one. The band cut five studio LPs total in the seventies with Schenker. The third of those LPs was the 1976 album, No Heavy Petting. It was UFO's fifth album total. Read on for my review.
If you've heard any recordings at all from Michael Schenker's days with UFO, you know that there is no such thing as a weak song from these days of the band. And on No Heavy Petting, that remains true. The classic UFO hit rocker Natural Thing kicks things off, and it's immediately followed up by another UFO classic, the slow-paced I'm A Loser (a different song from the Beatles one.) And sure enough, the good stuff doesn't stop after just the two tracks. Once again, the band beautifully succeeded in creating a diverse classic hard rock album that fuses hard rockers with incredible ballads. It's amazing just how good the band succeeds at doing ballds; you wouldn't expect a classic hard rock group to do them so well! There isn't much else to say, except that this album rules.
Like most UFO albums, this one is pretty much impossible to find if you live in America. Fortunately, there is an import solution - The UK twofer issues. Thanks to these twofers, you can get not one, but two awesome classic UFO albums in a single package (the No Heavy Petting album is paired with Lights Out in that series.) If you're searching for UFO albums, the British twofers are the best way to build your collection.
There really isn't much else I can say. UFO (especially Schenker-era UFO) rules, and they demonstrated it again on this album. If I keep talking, I am going to start to ramble, so I'll make my conclusion short and to the point - If you're a fan of classic hard rock, UFO's albums with Michael Schenker MUST be added to your collection.
Prepare yourself for a good rocking time
Most UFO fans consider the years between 1974 and 1978 to be the very best, a time UFO released five timeless classics each year by the name of "Phenomenon", "Force it", "No heavy petting", "Lights out", and "Obsession". The album "No heavy petting" from 1976 might just be the best of them all. UFO deliver hard rocking numbers like "Natural thing" (with a groove that send chills down my spine); fast tunes with a lot of melody like "Can you roll her" as well as catchy and lighter songs like "A fool in love" and "Highway lady". UFO also give proof of their feeling in writing slow semi ballads and the over all acoustic "Martian landscape" and "Belladonna" are both excellent. And don't forget the heavy blues inspired "On with the action", the almost Zeppelin sounding "Reasons love", and the more well known "I'm a loser". In my opinion, "No heavy petting" is one of the best hard rock albums ever released and UFO's ability to create variation in their material would indeed make you want to listen to these songs over and over again, year after year. As you put this album into your stereo you'll realize that there actually were a time when the albums contained a strong set of unique songs instead of one hit attempt and a lot of fillers. I'll chose an album of 9 or 10 good songs over an album that includes up to 15 tracks where half of them are at best mediocre any day. How about you?
