Description: Tina Turner's phenomenal reclamation of her stardom is perfectly chronicled on Simply the Best. With the exception of the Phil Spector epic "River Deep, Mountain High," everything included here comes from 1983 on. Turner's iconic voice and bluesy earnestness surface on a cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together." She brings a moody sensuality to "I Can't Stand the Rain." Equally adept at rock, soul, gospel, and R&B, Turner makes ordinary songs such as "Typical Male" and "Private Dancer" into extraordinary recordings. There are actually better Tina albums than Simply the Best, but it stands as a useful compilation of her comeback hits. --Steve Gdula

Reviews:

Great Disc :)

I do not understand why the reviewer below claimed Tina Turner is a Whitney Houston wannabe when Tina Turner's career started before Whitney was even born. And most of the hits on this compilation were released before Whitney Houston even hit it big. The review was ignorance in its purest form and it is the most pointless and ill-advised review I've ever seen. Its not good to make blanket statements about things you don't knmow. :)

I am a huge fan of both Tina and Whitney and it is clear to anyone who knowsanything about them that they are totally different and do not try to copy each other in any way shape or form. They are two different types of superstars. Tina Turner has sold almost 70 million albums since the 80s, she has also sold more concert tickets than any other female artist in rock history (yes even more than Madonna - and that only includes the concert sales since the 80s.). Tina Turner also made history in 1988 by having the largest paying concert attendance (182,000 people in Rio Di Janerio) for a SINGLE PERFORMER (not just female) and was also put in the 1989 Guiness Book of Records for it. when Tina Turner did her final cocnert tour in 2000 she was the highest grossing tour act in America, grossing over $80 million and beating out even NSync, Britney and other very popular acts.

I can go on and on about Tina Turner's achievements that CLEARLY set her apart from Whitney Houston. Tina Turner came before Whitney, and Tina (as well as Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder and more) is one of the artists that helped pave the way for artists like Whitney to have the incredible success that she has had. Whitney has had an amazing career including album sales of 120 million and 4 smash Silver Screen hits. The older artists helped pave the way to help her be able to carve her niche in the world of popular music.

This is a fantastic album. The new 4 tracks on this album at the time were very refreshing and added something new to the album. She does leave off a lot of hits such as "One of The Living". The DVD component to this is fantastic. For a more complete collection of her hits you are better off getting her new "All The Best" collection released in February 2005.

Her Macy Gray-esque voice can really become cloying, but....

Tina Turner always seemed like a Whitney Houston wannabe to me, and she failed miserably in that area, because her raspy warbling (which is disturbingly reminiscent of ear destroyer Macy Gray at times) will never be as enjoyable as Whitney's creamy, powerful, stunningly beautiful vocals. However, this Greatest Hits collection is more satisfying than Whitney's, because unlike 'The Greatest Hits,' which slavishly remixes all of Whitney's dance hits, and diminishing the appeal so many of us remember hearing on the radio long ago, 'Simply The Best' leaves Tina's hits untouched, in their original forms, and therefore delivers to her fans properly. And "What's Love Got To Do With It" is pretty damn fun. And Missy Elliott enthusiasts should recognize "I Can't Stand The Rain," whose chorus was sampled for Missy's debut hit titled simply "The Rain." So, I guess this is okay. I don't really like Tina Turner. I don't really know why I'm writing this review. I guess it's just because I'm pissed that Whitney Houston screwed up her GH collection, and Tina at least did it right. Oh, and I am kinda bored. So anyways. If you like Tina, well, here you go.

Only for Fans and the Uninitiated

No new liner notes, no real change to the packaging besides a nifty blue inset. Even as a fan I feel cheated. If you own the DVD and the CD, there's really no reason to buy this. If you own neither, this is an economical way to have a double shot of the Once and Future Queen of Soul. Most of us crazy Tina fans will probably buy it anyway- love is pain after all. But what's love got to do with it? Someone had to say it.

This Is Simply the Best

No words can describe how truly amazing an artist Tina Turner is. When she debuted in the late 1950's as half of Ike And Tina, she immediately made music history. Through the years, the duo released hit after hit including their most successful, a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary". Throughout, Tina Turner was always the center of attention while Ike stayed in the background with his guitar. After their bitter divorce in 1977, Tina went solo. This is when she would conquer the world with fierce ambition.

With the acceptions of "River Deep - Mountain High" and "Nutbush City Limits", this 1991 album release "Simply the Best" compiles her hits after going solo. Every song was written perfectly styled to suit her. All have that unique ingredient that suits her well. Whether rock, pop, R&B, or gospel, they maintain the quality that attracts listeners. The most noted is her biggest success "What's Love Got To Do With It" from 1984. Her vocal performances are only one aspect that earns her the title Queen of Rock. Her fierce and heartfelt performances always express her sung words to the fullest. Listeners can sense her strength and pain everytime she sings. Her highest potential energy is always presented in her performances.

Such talents prove why she has become one of the most influencial women in music history. Therefore, she's more that a music icon. It'll likely take many more years until another artist comes close to touching her territory. This makes "Simply the Best" a must-have for Tina Turner fans. This is sure to continue pleasing listeners for many more years.

why release this ???

Last year Capitol released "Simply the best" on DVD and a lot of fans were very disappointed with it. The 1991 laserdisc release had even more tracks on it then the new DVD release???
Capitol/EMI should release a complete video anthology of Turner starting with "Ball of confusion" from 1982 to "Whatever you need" in 2000 ! Why release this cd/combo set ? only for die hard fans who want to spend money and get nothing extra. I'm a very big Turner fan, but I am going to pass on this one...
