Reviews:

a fine return 2 form

i think some reviewers are missing the point its a long album, which i enjoyed, the only ones i skip are brand new car, baby break it down,

the rest are v gd,out of tears, thru and thru, the worst are fantastic,

having brought the strokes, coldplay albums among others,im puzzled by the the plaudits heaped upon those,

i think clapton etc hav started producing blues albums, why not the stones bridges to babylon was v gd but i prefer the stones gritty and blusie, and stop slagging off undercover it is a great album,

Burning Out Before They Fade Away

The only problem with Voodoo Lounge is its length. Clocking in at 15 tracks, the album overstays its welcome by at least 25 minutes with tracks that range from bland to just plain weird. Boring forays into worn creative terrain like "Brand New Car," "Sweethearts Together" or "Thru and Thru" either reach too far for a hip sound or simply don't reach for anything at all, while the miserable "New Faces" is easily one of the band's worst songs since their mid-80s slump. But the good tracks here are every bit as rewarding as the bad tunes are confounding, and there is too much here to rave about for Voodoo Lounge to be swept under the rug of a forty year career. With a catalog as large and impressive as the one Jagger and Richards assembled over the decades, it is just too easy to ignore the raucous brilliance of "I Go Wild," "You Got Me Rocking" or the anthemic "Love is Strong," featuring the band's most powerful rock performance since 1981's "Tattoo You." But as these more conventional Stones rockers confirm that they've still got a pulse, other, subtler performances suggest the possibility of newer creative horizons - a possibility that "Bridges To Babylon" failed to expand upon a few years later. The artful "Moon is Up" is as poignant as it is refreshing, and "Out of Tears" is an exquisitely frigid piano ditty on par with stuff like "Shine A Light" or "Play With Fire." Last but not nearly least, "The Worst" is one of the best songs Keith Richards has ever put to tape, and is itself a drift into less familiar territory with its rickety, fiddle-laden folk sound. Boasting at least 8 stellar tracks, this is easily the best Stones album since Tattoo You. Had it been shorter and leaner, this may also have been the band's most consistent work since that final masterpiece of 23 years ago.

One of the best albums I've listened to

Vooodoo Lounge was, after the disco-beats of Steel Wheels, and Emotional Rescue, Some Girls and Undercover Of The Night before it, the Stone's return to rock n' roll. Not really rock n' roll, but heavy rock: The album's theme is the heaviest rock the Stones would have produced. However, some of the songs are still pop like back in the day, and are the best. This album will remind you of many old Stones songs, mainly Satisfaction, and may make you sad. But, as Mick said once, "We've already given them Satisfaction, and they don't want it again", or something like that. This album is a gem, it's my favourite Stones album, believe it or not, and one of the best I've ever listened to.

Love Is Strong - The lead single and song from this album, features some harmonica by Mick, something that Stones fan wanted to hear since the recording of Midnight Rambler, featuring Mick at his harmonica peak. This one nearly outdoes the Let It Bleed classic. 10/10

You Got Me Rocking - Better than the opener IMO, a really good rocker though the final chorus drags a bit too long. Another single. 10/10

Sparks Will Fly - One of my least favourites here, though not a filler. Another rocker, this time with swear words. The lyrics vary from excellent (all of the second verse, look for the lyrics) to rushed and bad (gonna *$@(*$@ your sweet @*$)@, sparks will fly, sharks will cry). 8/10

The Worst - Keith's first singing song in the album, the three first and last opening lines are the best in the song. Good, but not as good as the others. 9.5/10

New Faces - The Stones nearly outdo As Tears Go By with this one. Another acoustic song with lots of string arrangements. Really good one, I love it. 10/10

Moon Is Up - One of my favourite riffs ever with Ronnie's Wah-Wah Pedal Steel guitar. Also great vocals by Mick. 10/10

Out Of Tears - The ballad in the album, the second longest song here. Though the verse has cheesy lyrics and the overall song may be a drag to listen, its chorus and guitar solo save it. One of the reasons I bought this album for. 10/10

I Go Wild - My favourite song here, though it may change someday. It's a straight forward rocker that makes you remember how good the Stones were at doing this. I love the last verse, and the mixing at the end of it and the chorus is amazing. The only mixing that I took notice of here was the only one mixed by someone who wasn't Keith, Mick (The Glimmer Twins) or Don Was. Amazing! 10/10

Brand New Car - A kind of weak song. The song misses the strong guitars or the feel-good that most Stones song have. Weak. 8/10

Sweethearts Together - No one makes this song better than the Stones. It's the same style as Sympathy For The Devil, believe it or not! An amazing one. Great chorus. 10/10

Suck On The Jugular - When I heard this song's name, I thought it was going to be awesome. It is weak, though. Again, like Brand New Car, misses something, and the lyrics are garbage (all get together and @()$(@ all night). Tsk tsk. 7.5/10

Blinded By Rainbows - Good song. Kind of slow, but still great! 10/10

Baby Break It Down - One of my favourites. Amazing tune. I love the chorus. This song makes you think, the Stones didn't put as much effort into writing this one as writing Gimme Shelter, but as Mick said once, "It's easier writing a pop song like As Tears Go By than a great rock n' roll song like C'mon Everybody". Still, wonderful. 10/10

Thru And Thru - The first time I heard this, I nearly fell asleep and thought, "Man I should be listening to Revolution 9, at least something happens". Now, this is one of my favourites. Starts off with Keith singing something pretty slow, and after the first chorus (amazing chorus BTW), Charlie's sudden drums come in, and they are scary the first time: So sudden they will make you jump! And so loud. Well, after 4 minutes, the song becomes a happy one, and is one of the best changes ever. I love it. 10/10

Mean Disposition - Great rocker, but would be much better if it would have been a tad more serious, more organized and without that damned piano that screws the song for me. Features a fantastic Mick vocal. Only appears on CD, so don't buy the cassette! Mean Disposition closes the album with a guitar solo. 9/10

Overall amazing album, you should get it.
