Reviews:

One of the very best singles bands of the '80s

With brilliant producer Richard Perry, The Pointer Sisters produced some of most brilliant pop singles of the early 1980s, beginning with their wonderful rendition of Bruce Springesteen's "Fire" that reached #5 in the Australian charts, and continuing right up to the Beverley Hills cop tune "Neutron Dance" [with the memorably catchy "Industry don't pay a price that's fair/All the common people breating filthy air (lord, have mercy)"] of 1985. The vocal harmonies of the three sisters are breathtaking all through, and the variety of styles and material, from "Should I Do It" to my favorite, the brilliant, sultry "Automatic", is superb, and Perry never puts a foot wrong.
At the same time, Anita, Ruth and June are so forthright about what they are saying - always keeping the listener aware of their talents for singing catchy pop tunes, at which they were, in this era, virtually unrivalled. They are able to literally place themselves in the same situation as the writers of the material they sing - something that is rare among today's interpreational singers.
It is noteworthy how Perry's lavish production paved the way for David A. Stewart to emerge in the mid-80s, for Stewart's work wit Annie Lennox shows a clear debt to Perry's work, notable on "Sweet Dreams" and "Right By Your Side".
On thw whole, a strongly recommended purchase for anyone into early '80s music.
