Greatest Hits?
Some are saying this should be considered a "greatest hits" package. I disagree. There are too many omissions. "Only One" "Eyes Wide Open" "We Are The Normal"...
This is a good cd for waht it is, a live show. But by no means, is this a greatest hits collection. Its mostly Post Dizzy material...I hope that should this band ever release a greatest hits album, they include all those hits off A Boy Named Goo, SuperStar Car wash, and even the albums prior which I don't particularly care for.
Just "Goo" It
I first discovered the Goo Goo Dolls after my sister talked about the the film City Of Angels. While she responded to the movie's story, I dismissed it, as nothing more than a retread of Ghost. Wanting to cheer her up after a bad patch, I bought her the soundtrack and found that I liked some of the songs on the CD better than the flick itself. One of my favorite tracks is the song Iris--and since then, I have been an avid listener of the band and its music. The movie connection to Goo doesn't end with City though... 1978's Superman The Movie is one of those influential films I saw as a kid that been with me. The only pop song to appear in that film (and it's not on the soundtrack) is Supertramp's Give A Little Bit. It's cool that Goo found a way to to make that song find its way back for today with an excellent cover.
The CD: Recorded live in Buffalo New York, as an Independence Day concert in 2004, the release makes you feel like you are right in the thick of it, Lead vocalist John Rzeznik, drummer Mike Malinin, and the rest of the band didn't let a steady rain dampen their perfomance and the crowd certainly seemed to enjoy it. There's nothing quite like listening to a live album--the energy level is greater. All of my favorites are here Iris, Slide, Dizzy, Accoustic #3, Broadway...Sympathy. The CD features the studio and live versions of Give A Little Bit The CD has 20 tracks and a running time of 77:31.
The DVD features the Buffalo concert, a behind the scenes video of how it all came together, and a solid audio commentary from the band. Whether you just hear it, see it, or do both, the Buffalo show is a good time for fans. A great double disc combo.
Unbelievable CD!
I just got this CD and have not stopped listening to it. Even though it was recorded outdoors and sometimes in a torrential downpour, the sound is very high quality. The vocals and music are not obstructed by the noise of the crowd. There is something for everyone in this, as it is essentially a "greatest hits" CD -(with the added bonus of a live crowd who absolutely adores their hometown band). Johnny was superb! I especially loved "Sympathy" - just perfect. Their version of "Give a Little Bit" has style and brings back memories. The DVD is awesome! You can really feel the energy of the crowd and the band. The rain actually adds to the viewing pleasure. Johnny, and especially Robby look like they are enjoying themselves immensely. This is a must have for any fan of the Goo Goo Dolls!
