Description: The album feels even more like a collection of singles (instead of an actual movie soundtrack) than
Help! or
A Hard Day's Night, but maybe that's because every song sounds like it could have been a hit single--with the natural exception of the goofy/weird instrumental "Flying." Even George's "Blue Jay Way" paints a vivid sound-portrait in fascinating detail. (I consider Joni Mitchell's "Car on the Hill" from
Court and Spark to be a companion piece about sitting in the Hollywood Hills, waiting for somebody to show up.) And although the goofy TV movie may have been mostly Paul's baby, this album features the two 45 rpm masterpieces that sum up the quintessential best of Lennon
and McCartney at this stage of their development: Paul's "Penny Lane" and John's "I Am the Walrus."

RE: an idea that may be even cooler than the YELLOW SUBMARINE soundtrack re-release.
Roll the clock back to 1967 . . .
Imagine an alternate reality when it was common for record singles to simultaneously appear on their respective albums in the U.K. Imagine the Beatles were still getting along famously and the group was not disrupted by the sudden death of manager Brian Epstein. Now imagine the Beatles, after just releasing SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND, have focused their efforts on making another fantastic album instead of becoming sidetracked by movie projects. Finally they emerge with a psychedelic masterpiece to rival SGT. PEPPER'S. The end result is a double album - the definitive MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR album!
This revised and expanded collection of classics would consist of material recorded from the first SGT. PEPPER sessions (that didn't appear on that album) up to before THE BEATLES (White album) sessions. This includes all the songs from the original MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR (American album/British EP set), the Beatles songs from the original YELLOW SUBMARINE soundtrack, the singles from this time period, plus unreleased instrumental music from the MMT soundtrack. As a special limited edition release, how about a double gatefold vinyl LP mixed for that format (still argueably the best fidelity around today). The cover could be more psychedelic, perhaps in 3-D, the inside could contain special photos and text (why not from the original British double EP?) and maybe even a Beatles adventure/story about an alternate reality that lead to this album.
With this collection of songs, you can create one side of 5 songs and 3 sides of 4 songs. The first side could contain the origial "Flying" instrumental while each remaining side would include "Flying 2," "Flying 3," and "Flying 4." The extra "Flying" tracks would consist of instrumental soundtrack material never before released on record (which Beatles fans would no doubt love to get their hands on): "Shirley's Wild Accordion a: Waltz b: Freaky Rock" and "Jessie's Dream." Thus, you could have 4 sides of 5 songs each.
Immediately following is my recommendation for the running order. I found it useful to put 1 of George Harrison's 4 songs as well as original MMT songs on each side.

Magical Mystery Tour forever
Strawberry Fields Forever, I am The Walrus, Penny Lane, and ALl You Need is Love are all songs that live on as rock standards and they are amazing songs that make this album great. Not to Mention that every other song on this album is also great. Magical Mystery Tour is an amazing acheivment from the greatest band of all time and although it is not their best it almost matches the lp released a few months before, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts CLub Band, which is considered the Beatles most prominent album. This is also The Beatles most psychedelic album which shows on I am The Walrus, Flying, and Strawberry Fields. Buy this cd if you are already a slight beatles fan and even if your starting to get into the beatles. If u do not like this album then dont judge The Beatltes music by your impression here. Abbey Road, The WHite Album, Revolver, Sgt Peppers, Help, Rubber SOul, Let it BE are all magnificent as well.
Oooh So Good And Tuneful
The wonderful thing about the 'Magical Mystery Tour' album is that it's track listing not only reads like a greatest hits but that the Fab Four managed to be both highly psychedelic
and experimental whilst maintaining such a high quality level of songwriting.'Sgt.Pepper' tried but often got so indulgant because it was they're first outing of the sort. But this album is alot catchier and more fun.Musicians such as Haryy Nillson,Badfinger and even early Bowie would make their first killings from territory first explored by the Beatles here.Since the only way to take this in is song by song that is what I'll do:
1.Magical Mystery Tour-GREAT echoplexed rocker,uptempo and bouncy.
2.Fool On The Hill-A McCartney piano ballad with an excellent surrealist lyric and one his prettiest melodies.Great use of horns too.
3.Flying-The only released Beatle instrumental.A moody piece using the melletron and oddball humming for ther melody.
4.Blue Jay Way-A brooding Harrison number with a dark,trance-like feel that seems a little out of place but is compelling regardless.I wonder if this chant was a mantra of some kind.
5.I Am The Walrus-Lennon's most un ususual but accessible piece of psychedelia. The lyrics are completely inpenetrable but the constant melodic changes, steady beat and song build up will hold one's attention.
6.Your Mother Should Know-A bouncy,music hall-like McCartney number.Very much a nice sing-a-long type pop tune.
7.Strawberry Fields Forever-Lennon and the Beatles first delve into full blown psychedelic rock.Pulsing melletrons, sitars and horns work their way out of this quircky hook.
8.Penny Lane-A great bouncy pop number-bright and sunny as ever.
9.Hello Goodbye-One of the Beatles best songs as I see it from the 1967 era.Very clever in every way.
10.Baby Your A Rich Man-The Beatles catchiest tune using a backwards tape loop.Lennon sings in his high falsetto.
11.All You Need Is Love-The Beatles simple but effective answer to their generations call.Great way to end this album.
As one can see this album (albeit their are so many others) would make a better then average introduction to The Beatles music for those who oddly don't have at least one of their CD's.All the best qualities they have-clever lyrics, steady instrumentation, clever musical ideas and their own personal charm would be more then enough to carry this if they hadn't created eleven little anthems for this CD.A must have for any fan of modern music!
