Description: This disc represents the bridge between Talking Heads' first two herky-jerkier albums and the next two funky ones. Fear of Music is more than just a bridge, though. It's the water under the bridge, the air, the animals, the cities the river flows through, and the heaven on top of it all: "...a place where nothing ever happens." Plenty happens here, however. The CD starts out with its feet off the ground and both arms in the air: "I Zimbra" is all-out celebration. The rest of the songs are pretty much exercises in simplicity: one-word titles with music to match. (Witness the lightness of "Air," the trippiness of "Drugs," the "ooga"-ness of "Animals.") David Byrne's artful naiveté ("Hold the paper up to the light/Some rays pass right through"), coupled with the whole band's musical playfulness (for example, the tuba on "Electric Guitar"), makes for fun fun fun. --Dan Leone

Reviews:

Be afraid, be very afraid (one of the Talking Head's best)

Rhythmic, electronic, paranoiac and foreboding in both words and music it is at the same time for some reason somewhat infectious. Through out the album the Talking Heads never stop the hard driving pace (highly recommended for waking up to and for commuting). It has an air of dark mystery through out. These are surreal songs for surreal times. The lyrics at times are highly clever and sometimes down right laugh out loud funny.

Highly recommended

Excellent, but not their best

I agree completely with David Bradeley's review below. The first 8 tracks on this album are brilliant and beautiful songs. Unfortunately the album has a trio of weak songs at the end (Animals, Electric Guitar, Drugs) so I cannot rate it as highly as the first 2 flawless albums or the next one, the masterpiece "Remain in Light". People who love the Heads will love this album, but it's not my fav of theirs.

Fear Of Loosing The Known

For me this CD is one of their best...they are all good and different but I particulary find the Head's use of minimalism and space in the texture of the sound great...Eno and Fripp...a bit of Hasidic sounding swagger,New York alienation,African tribalism, sweetness, self destruction, I bought this LP when it came out and the CD and the arty cover depicting a typical New York cellar gates found on floors often by supermarkets and sewers is the feel of this whole CD...grounded, a place where nothing and evreything always happens..arty for sure..I would love to hear expanded remastered editions of their CD's(if tracks exists..especially this one.. one of extreme moods..and yes the CD still sounds clear fine the way it is...Eno and Fripp indeed..old and new.
