Description: This debut by the L.A.-based quartet is a hybrid of explosive rap-metal, politically incendiary lyrics, and wide-ranging cultural influences. The members are of Armenian descent, but their diverse stylistic background transcends easy cultural labeling. Singer Serj Tankian's throaty roar competes with any mosh-pit rocker around, but his real trademark is his emotional wail and refreshingly melodic singing, especially on songs such as "Spiders" and the condemnatory "P.L.U.C.K." Guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummer John Dolmayan lock in tight on the capricious arrangements of "Know," "Ddevil," and "CUBErt." Their musical diversity runs wonderfully wild on "Sugar" and "Suggestions" with dizzying shifts of style and intensity. The tracks "Peephole" and "War?" reveal the band at perhaps its eclectic best, with vaguely Eastern European-sounding guitar riffs, passionate battle cries, and samples provided by legendary hip-hop producer Rick Rubin.

Reviews:
Awesome cd...by a great band
First off..ive been hearing this band since i first heard them back in 95'...Before this cd came out. So when they finally got signed by American Recordings..i couldnt wait for this cd to come out. This whole damn cd rocks...its bar none their best cd..but since they only have 2 albums out..the best is yet to come. I favor this one over Toxicity because..i dont get tired of listening to it. Dont get me wrong, Toxicity is great also..but after hearing those songs getting played to death on the radio..its refreshing to pop this cd in and rock out, to some great songs. Anyways, this cd is underrated big time...one of the best rock cd's to come out in the 90's.
Best Album Ever By System
Before System of a Down got repetitive radio play with Toxicity in 2001, they released this masterpiece. "Sugar" is a f**ked up song, but in a good way. They get really experimental with their music. "Spiders", the second single, is mellower, but still a good song nevertheless. This is a good album. You should buy it.
How it should sound
Ok, So the clean version is not the best. After i go this I bought the explicit version and its better. Ddevil, Sugar, Suite-pee, War?. Some of my favorite songs are on this album. Serj Tankians lyrics, Daron Malakian on guitar, Shavo Odajian and the bass, and the amazing John Dalmayan on set. System of a Down represents everything that Metal should be today. If it weren't for them, theres no way I would listen to the radio at all. Armenian metal is by far the best idea in music today. BUY THIS ALBUM!!! NOW!!! STOP READING, JUST GO!!! WHY ARE YOU STILL READING THIS?!?!?!?!
Just What I Expected
I knew I needed a System of a Down CD when I heard Chop Suey!, Toxicity and B.Y.O.B. on the radio. So I bought this. And let me tell you....IT'S AWESOME! IF YOU DON'T HAVE THIS AND YOU ARE A METAL/HARD ROCK FAN, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MISSING!!!!!!! Here's all of the songs and what I think of them.
1. Suite-Pee: Strange name. Anyways, this is a fast song and a great one to start off the album with. In this song, Serj ranges from piercing high screeches to death metal-like screams. Also, strange lyrics; "Crossed and terrored ravages of architecture, lend me thy blades, we're crossed and terrored ravages of archtecture, hoist around the spade." This is an awesome song and as I said, a great opener.
My Rating: 10/10
2. Know: Still a good song, not as good as some others. As many other tracks in the CD, this is very fast and LOUD. They sing about women flying up into the sun. Yeah....... Not at all weak, but not as good as Suite-Pee, Sugar and some others. Also has a death metal touch to it.
My Rating: 9/10
3. Sugar: When this started, I didn't know that Know had ended. The end of Know and the beginning of Sugar sound almost exactly the same. Awesome, awesome chorus and overall a great, complete song. But who are the Kombucha Mushroom People? Awesome song, though.
My Rating: 10/10
4. Suggestions: Although slower and more melodic than Sugar, Suite-Pee, etc., this is still a great song. Odd song. It's got a pretty fast chorus but not the rest of the song. In one part of the song, Serj sounds VERY weird.
My Rating: 9/10
5. Spiders: This is even slower than Suggestions. Strangely a bit haunting, this song is great. It's about people's dreams not being "protected" anymore. On another note, this is the second single off this CD.
My Rating: 10/10
6. Ddevil: This song seems sort of silly in a way. I mean, they say "Shake your spear at Shakespeare" and at part of the song, it seems like Serj is chirping...
My Rating: 8/10
7. Soil: I liked this song. It's another hard, metalish song unlike Spiders and Suggestions. It's about a close friend commiting suicide or something like that. Strange subject to sing about, yes, but when you think about it, System of a Down has done stranger things. I liked it.
My Rating: 9/10
8.War?: Serj really shows off his voice on this song. Apparantly, someone's gonna fight the heathens.
My Rating: 9/10
9. Mind: Starts off really slow, and for the first minute and a half, they basically whisper. But it gets louder. In the song, you'll hear one of the oddest sounds you'll ever hear. It's like "EEARHREGIOAHGSRHWSAIOHGFH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" As you can tell, I can't describe it very well. In this song, they say free thinkers are dangerous. That probably has something to do with the government.
My Rating: 10/10
10. Peephole: "Don't you ever get stuck in the sky, when you're high." They must say this about 1000 times in this song. I like this song, but I like A LOT of others are better on this album.
My Rating: 8/10
11. CUBErt: I think Serj is chirping again in this song. This song is about overpopulation in a country and everybody starving to death. Odd song, very loud. I like it!
My Rating: 9/10
12. Darts: At the beginning, Serj sounds possibly the weirdest and the screechiest on this whole CD. On this song, there's a lot of death-metal screaming and then almost complete silence except for talking. In the background, I think I heard that "EEARHREGIOAHGSRHWSAIOHGFH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" again. That freaks me out.
My Rating: 9/10
13. P.L.U.C.K.(Politically Lying, Unholy, Cowardly Killers): In my opinion, the oddest song on the whole album. For about 1/4 of the song, Serj screams or music plays, then there is COMPLETE silence. This song is about the Armenian Genocide. As I said, odd. I really like it, though.
My Rating: 10/10
Okay, I'm done rating the songs. My top 3 songs on the album are:
3. Spiders
2. Suite-Pee
1. SUGAR
So, for a conclusion, I will say;
BUY THIS ALBUM! I look forward to getting either Toxicity, Steal This Album! or SOAD's coming album, Mesmerize soon. Bye.
Metal feak
This allbum is so ... good, it?s a new band that gonna break through, i recomend this cd for all music freaks!
Too Bad Not Everyone Can Be This Good.
Not many bands find their feet as quickly as System of a Down did with this, their self-titled debut, released back in 1998. Of course, it helps when you have super-star producer Rick Rubin (Slayer, Beastie Boys) working for you, but I think this debut is the main reason why System of a Down have so much respect and credibility in the music world, after less than a decade on the scene. There are a wide range of influences weaved throughout this album. Yeah, they definitely carved a niche within the nu-metal movement that was going on at the time, but their music is so skilled and original that they are one of the few bands left standing that earned their survival. Afterall, with a singer as flamboyant and distinct as Serj Tankian, it's hard to forget what you've heard. There has always been a political undercurrent in Serj's frantic rants, but he also balances those moments with a sense of humor, a combination that can bring anyone from any walk of life into their world. "Peephole" is one of the most memorable moments, a drug-ballad of sorts that sounds like it came straight out of the circus. "P.L.U.C.K." is probably the most politically charged track of the bunch, and shows S.O.A.D. at their most dead-pan and passionate. Elsewhere, songs like "Sugar" and "Ddevil" are downright bizaare, and "Spiders" and "Suggestions" explore a more subdued, melodic side. There is, no doubt, an abundance of variety. If you love heavy metal, you got it. If you're leaning more towards alternative, you got that too. I really can't think of anyone I know who doesn't dig System of a Down's music. It's hard to find something negative in music that is this honest and this special. If you got started with their more recent work, and you still don't own this, you're a fool. It's easily one of the best albums in my collection, and owning it for six years now, I can tell you it stands the test of time.
