Description: There is a difference between being an inspired musician and an informed musician. Sting is the latter. As always, he surrounds himself with ultratalented artists: this time around Stevie Wonder, Branford Marsalis, James Taylor, guitarist Dominic Miller, and the prince of rai Cheb Mami, fill the roster.
Brand New Day exhibits about as many musical styles as there are tracks, all encased in dense, meticulous production. The album begins promisingly. "A Thousand Years" pulses atop a lush, two-note foundation. "A Desert Rose" folds trilling Algerian pop into trip-hop. Melodic, late-night jazz ballads dominate the middle portion of the collection. But Sting's preoccupation with odd-numbered time signatures prevents the songs from grooving, while the choruses are yawns. "Fill Her Up" (no, not "Fill 'Er Up"), a country tune, represents Sting at his most self-indulgent. Listening to one of the wealthiest musicians in pop singing "Got no money to invest / Got no prospect / Or education / I was lucky to get the job at this gas station" requires a heroic suspension of disbelief. The song morphs into this gospel number where Sting and a supporting chorus chant "You gotta fill 'er up with Jesus! / You gotta fill her up with life!" Who knew unleaded could be so rousing?

Reviews:
a disappointment
I love Sting, I think he's one of the best pop singer/songwriter's ever. This CD is better than the best effort of most others out there. Having said that, I expected more out of this album. Having been blown away by Mercury Falling, Ten Summoner's Tales, Soul Cages and Nothing Like the Sun, I was disappointed by this CD. I agree with another reviewer that the best song is probably "Ghost Story," which, along with "Desert Rose" shows that Sting still has the magic. His one of a kind voice, combined with inventive melodies and progressive harmonies, makes this album a must-have for die-hard Sting fans. However, for the rest of you, skip this album. The title song is slightly catchy, but a little odd, and is not particularly memorable as Sting songs go. You'll probably be disappointed with everything but "Desert Rose," and maybe "Brand New Day" or "ghost Story." But if you're comparing it to most of the other pop/rock artists' efforts, then it still rises above.
My compass star, my measure...
After the commercial failure of "Mercury Falling," Sting amazed the audience worldwide with "Brand New Day," which was released before the advent of the Millennium with strong world music flavors. The appreciation Sting gained from the resurrection of his artistic creativity genuinely reflected on the album's sale, and it was by far his most popular album for the young generation.
The various genres of music Sting finessed into the songs is proficient and enjoyable. "A Thousand Years" covers reincarnation and the unchangeable cycle of true love, which is unbelievably moving. As for "Desert Rose," everyone seems to fancy the song a lot, and so do I. The Arabic singing part done by Cheb Miami deepened the images of longing that suffuse the song. Contrary to most people's opinion, I personally enjoy "Tomorrow We'll See" very much for its catchy melody and compassionate lyrics. "Ghost Story" is my favorite song on the album, whose intension of background music ends the song emotionally. "Brand New Day" is the typical sound of Sting, and the addition of Stevie Wonder's saxophone even lightens up the song further. As to the songs I do not describe, it does not mean that they are not good. After all, powerful tracks need some foils so that their greatness can stand out.
"Lovers" are the main lyrical theme of the album, each of whose songs tells a unique story. As Sting wrote "There are no victories in all our histories without love" in "Mad about You" back from his "Soul Cages" album, the songs eloquently account for his romantic belief. Some of the stories are cheerful, others are tragic, and still others are amusing, yet I involuntarily empathize with every fictitious character's confessions.
"Brand New Day" is fun, intense, and thought-provoking. With its richness in the variety of songs, you can definitely listen to the whole world from the CD. I highly recommend it to every avid music fan.
My Favourite Winter Album....
Sting did a lot of music in his life. I cant say I;ve heard all but amongst what I've heard , this album and its brilliance truly stands out. Its the kind of an album that contains songs that reminds one of the winters they've lived in their life. The songs force me to go to a room with a wooden fireplace and snow outside. Its just that crisp in its true ode to music.
"Thousand Years" is an anthem of its own sort and it really quite well manages to announce an unstable awkward wave that the album contains (also its charm) "Desert Rose" is something I wont merely forget. Its life giving in the dreams of far off unknown places it promises. The world won't forget this song soon , atleast not in the rest of my days. "After The Rain Has Fallen" is something that makes me happy with its lyrics. "Big Lies Small World" is a tearjerker with killing lyrics about a man and his broken relationship. Its quite close to being called the best song on the album. "Perfect Love Gone Wrong" reminds me of the streets I never went to and the love I never had. "Tomorrow We'll see" just makes me go numb with the absolute genius work involved in making it as flawless as it sounds. "Fill her up" is another story song and its quite quite marvelous. Its like a short story. I didnt even know I like music like that until I heard it.
Ghost Story is something I'd be damned if I dont dedicate a paragraph too. Its something beyond my comprehension abilities. It evokes in me a feeling of belonging to this earth and time. Its a song about love and the cold winter. Its something thats not quite easy to forget. With Lyrics like
"Another winter comes
His icy fingers creep
Into these bones of mine
These memories never sleep
And all these differences
A cloak I borrow
We kept our distances
Why should it follow I must have loved you"
It totally takes a part of me. If your considering purchasing this album , buy two copies of it and gift the other to the one you love.Emotions were never this well defined. Sting is my dad.
