Description: Songs in the Key of Life (1976) was the highest high point of Stevie Wonder's career. More sprawling than
Innervisions and
Talking Book, this two-LP-plus-EP was also less of a consistent stunner than either of those masterworks. That
Songs retains an enormous amount of visionary relevance, though, is demonstrated not only in Coolio's borrowing of "Pastime Paradise" as a template for "Gangsta's Paradise," but in the cold-as-ice synthesized string quartet of "Village Ghetto Land." This is Stevie, so naturally that cut's anger is balanced by the ultra-buoyant "I Wish," "Sir Duke," and "Another Star." The 2000 reissue boasts radically improved remastered sound.

Reviews:
Great music. WAY too much high end. PROTECT YOUR EARS...
For comments about the music, read some of the informative reviews here.
I want to reiterate what one reviewer said (buried among well over 100 reviews): This particular CD was made with WAY too much high end, SO much that it may damage the ears. (There is another, older CD of "Songs in the Key of Life" that differs from this one -- ASIN # B0000060NA -- though I do not know whether it has a similar problem.)
PROTECT YOUR EARS!
If you listen to this CD even close to loud, turn down the Treble setting from around 2K-4K down.
Enjoy! HalleluYah! Prize Yah!
(EQ SETTING DETAILS--Depending on your speakers and the volume: 4K, down about 4dB; 8K down about 9dB; 16K down about 9dB. MAYBE a small boost around 1K of 3dB. Again, depending on your speakers.)
:-)
Hallelujah/Alleluia: Praise Yah!
One of the greatest double albums ever made!
Ah, Songs in the Key of Life!: Mention the name Stevie Wonder to the average person on the street and they will quickly tell you how much they love this album. And it is a great album indeed. Stevie Wonder is one of the greatest composers in popular music history and his brilliance is vividly illustrated througout this cd. 'Sir Duke', Stevie's tribute to Duke Ellington who is also one of the greatest composers in the history of music is a rapturous tune that has the loose feel of an old 1940's jazz record but totally "Wonderfied":-). "I Wish" is a vivacious funk jam with Stevie blessing us with vocals that could normally only be heard in deep southern churches on Sunday mornings. "Knocks Me Off My Feet" ranks in the top five most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. This song is impeccably constructed and Stevie's sense of melody is downright heavenly. I could go on and on, and as great as this album is, it is a little bloated. In its defense, every double album that I have ever heard is a little bloated, and this is definitely one of the top three double albums ever made. But, as brilliant as each album that I would put in the top three is, they are all a little bloated, so in no way is that criticism directed just at Stevie. And even though this album does sprawl a little, its sprawl kind of adds to its overall charm. There are several songs that turn into 8 minute jam sessions on this cd, but Stevie is such a great composer and he was so on top of his game that you don't even notice. I find myself listening to "Joy Inside My Tears" and wondering why the song ended so soon. This album is definitely essential for your collection, but if your looking for this genius' best work, take it from me, "Talking Book" and "Innervisions" are even better. "Music of my Mind" and "Fullfillingness' First Finale" are almost as good and are just as essential. Stevie Wonder has a whole lot more to offer than just this wonderful album and/or various greatest hits compilations. Don't be afraid to dig deeper into this genius' catalog. The rewards reaped will be phenominal. Sianara!
The Leader
I first came across this Album in the summer of 1991 whilst on Holiday at my Uncle's Place in France
He has a Wide Range of 60's and 70's Records
If he was to auction the record I am sure he may get something for it
This LP took 2 years to make and is among one of the Very best Double Albums ever Made, I also came across Innervisions, Hotter than July, Talking Book at the same time whilst on the same Holiday. This Album is just some of the Very Best Music you will ever come across. One thing I have not heard many people talk about is the Track "Contusion". It's one of those songs that goes well with Driving on Country Roads at great Speeds (Just be careful not to go too mad). Please if anyone is going to add to the Review after me, say something about Contusion, this track alone Ranks up with Earth Wind and Fire, Average Whiteband and Heatwave, as for the Rest, Just Discover what is Missing in Modern Day R&B.
