Description: One of the true characters of L.A.'s first hardcore wave, Social D's frontman Mike Ness seemingly fancied himself a boot-boy Johnny Cash at the time of this 1983 release. The tales he spun--many of which were later borne out by stints in jail and drug treatment--blurred the line between American anti-hero and punk no-goodnik, between Cash and the Clash. And, unlike a lot of their Angeleno brethren, Ness and axeman Dennis Danell really knew how to write a song. Admittedly, this incarnation of the band is decidedly less accessible than the current edition. And while they may not be as anthemically inspiring as the more earnest work found on, say,
Prison Bound, snotty proclamations like the title track and "It Wasn't a Pretty Picture" stomp along with authority to spare.

Reviews:
one more classic
i remember when i got this album at a small cd store for only 7 bucks(what a deal!) not knowing anything about social d. (much less punk rock.) i was listening to anti-flag, rancid, nofx, not that those bands dont provide great music, but then i didnt know what was totally real and what wasnt(know what i'm sayin!?) i remember it was this album, doa's bloodied but unbowed, misfits' earth ad,black flag's damaged, descendents, and circle jerks that totally kickstarted a never ending journey through a realm with never-ending possibilities(musically at least, lol). now that i have left and revisted this album several times, today, i thought to myself "this album is great!" once more. what i just said shows how these 9 inspirational, powerful, guitar driven hardcore punk tunes from OC can get ya. social d. didnt need to play super fast like other bands, they had their own style which is what makes a great band.
"all the answers" has to be my fav. social d. song and the version on this album is the greatest one of em all, all of these songs are all at their best here. now i'm no fan of the later-social d. i think theyre better known for but i have heard those 82 demos, seen that short video of them playing "under my thumb" and "1945" back in those early days, and have the mainliner comp. also... but this album beats all those things, a classic, an essential for anyone whether they think so and so "is punk rock" or if they just wana hear something they could find themselves listening to time and time again.
Social Distortion's finest work
Social D have been around for over twenty years now and have released several albums. Of all of them, this one stands far above the others. OK, so their self titled album is excellent and they have a good song every now and then on their other albums, but here on their debut, they were at their highest point. From the first track "The creeps" to "Moral threat", Mommy's little monster is pure punk rock greatness. Just listen to tracks like all the answers, another state of mind, mommys little monster, moral threat and telling them. These songs amazed me when I first heard them. Without a doubt, this is one of the greatest punk albums ever, recomended if you like punk or just rock music in general.
The Best
This album truely changed my life. Best track's right off the bat, the creeps. This is the album you'll pop in your car and before you know it, your beating the hell out of the steering wheel and driving about 80...having a good time.
