Description: When you listen to this collection of nearly all the noteworthy singles by the Smiths, you might marvel over the fact that Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr collaborated and cowrite so many astonishing tunes only to break up a mere four years into their creative burst. The first half of
Singles is a relentless parade of top-notch emotional Morrissey punches. Then just when you think you're going to catch your breath, "Bigmouth Strikes Again" breaks out and the poignancy and wit of that charming man really hits home. From the shimmering "Ask" to the dark crooner "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" to the closing hit "There is a Light That Never Goes Out," the collection leaves one feeling wistful, for these tracks will never be matched.

Great Songs at a Great Price: Solid CD
Anyone who knows me understands that I am a huge fan of the Smiths and from the first time I saw the video of "Girlfriend in a Coma" when I was about 11 years I knew this was a great band. Their music and sound is unique but they are energetic and quite fun to listen to. This CD offers a lot of the Smiths at a good price but understand that this is only part of the story. It has fantastic tracks like "Hand in Glove", "Big Mouth Strikes Again" and "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" but it is missing a ton of great works. Also, though they were singles there are a few tracks on this CD that arent the finest. This is an excellent CD to buy as a first CD but I'll say that if you are willing to make the investment buy all of the albums you will be glad you did. Otherwise start here: this album makes a great mix CD for the car once you have bought all of the albums which you will surely do.
Ted Murena
perfect starting point
If you aren't yet familiar with The Smiths, this is the best place to start. It's accessable with all the hits you've probably already heard on college rock stations, or in movies, but includes some of their better songs you may not be familiar with. Certainly not all encompassing, it is a good overview of their career. You can say there are quintessential groups for every decade in rocks history: the 60's belonged to the Beatles, the 70's to Led Zeppelin, and I think history will, in time, show that the Smiths were the most important group of the 80's. Having infulenced many up and coming groups like Interpol, a well desereved notoriety has finally found the Smiths in the recent garage rock resurgence. Get this album, then get more!
So this is This Smiths (?)
After hearing a few of their songs (and reading all these flaming reviews on Amazon), I went out and purchased my first Smiths album, this one. I hoped I would get the best of their work on 1 disc..and I don't know if I did. This collection was a mixed bag for me. I absolutely love the song "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out;" it's probably one of my favorite songs ever. I also enjoyed "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side," the classic "This Charming Man" and "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now." However, I didn't care so much for about half of the album. I think it's a good CD to own if you want a more well-rounded music collection though. But don't take my word for it, have a go at it yourself.
