Description: Give Shania Twain points for honesty. Up!, her first new release in five years, offers both pop and country versions of the same 19 songs, the red disc boasting pop renditions while the green proffers country. It's a smart idea, since it allows Twain the freedom to dress a song in whatever arrangements and instrumentation she pleases--without setting herself up for criticism as to whether Canada's Queen of the Bare Midriff spat on the Holy Grail of Nashville. Often, the only difference is the substitution of pedal steel, fiddle, and banjo for strings, guitars, and keyboards. In these situations, where she employs the same riffs and melodic strains, the country version usually pales in comparison; however, the green disc wins on those songs where the subject matter hits closer to home, especially the unwed mother tune "I Ain't Goin' Down." Twain was never truly a country singer--she was merely marketed that way--and her red disc particularly pleases, while making no excuses. She is what she is: a perky lounge singer with a calculatedly honeyed voice, a penchant for inane lyrics--often about absolutely nothing--and, in tandem with her husband, Mutt Lange, a masterful command of rhythm, production, and mood. ("I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" is confection perfection.) There's something oddly hypnotic about much of this project, and it may be simply hearing what Shania can do when she abandons the pretense of being a country singer and concentrates on music. Call this a guilty pleasure--pop, country, or somewhere in between. --Alanna Nash

Reviews:

A Good Pop Album...

It was well over 5 years since 1997's "Come On Over." The album that sold over 20 million copies world wide and that made her the star that she is. Shania Twain done something that she has never done before her past 3 studio's album and that was included 2 versions of one album in the same case. She choose to do one for pop and one for country. On this album like she done her past 2 studio albums she has wrote all of the songs with her husband. The sounding and the songs are very much different than anything she has ever done before. The only thing that "UP!" and "Come On Over" has in common is that they are very happy and alot more up-tempo songs than ballads. This album seems to be more about having fun and being happy. The 3 songs that are heartfelt is "Forever and For Always", "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing" and "When You Kiss Me." Those happen to also be the only 3 ballads on the album. All the songs on the album are well written and almost all of them has a meaning. The one song that Shania could done without on this album could have been "Juanita."

This album is very much a Shania album all about having fun and not being serious. Despite having 2 versions to this album i would rather here the red disc (Pop version) over top of the green disc (country version), there is not really a difference in either one of them, the only difference is the country version is slower than the pop version. Shania Twain is a remarkable artist and she shows us that she is very different than any other artist out there. She only get's better with each album.

Ooh! i'm so in love with Shania!

Not only can she sing, but she also drop dead gorgeous in person. I think she the hottest country singer out there! I love a country girl because their something about them that is very unique. I don't know what it is, but they do have a good quality to them, and maybe that why. Okay back to the review. I didn't like 4 songs from her cd but that ok, because the other 15 songs i like, and 15 good songs is more than any other album with only 11-14 song. Since i use a mp3 converter and own a cd/mp3 player, i just simply delete the 4 song i don't like! Now my "up!" cd has all the song i like! So it really 15 song i like in one cd! Even though you don't like all of the song, it still a worthy purchase and is still recommend. Because their really notting that i don't like from this album. Shania Twain music is really refreshing. It country mix with pop which is a very good thing, and since the cd come in two verson (country and pop) it an excellent purchase! from the time i sleep to the time I wake up and to the time i'm jogging at the park, "Up" is the cd i can listen to all day long! So there you have it. This is my review and i hope this has help you make a decision. The answer is quite clear, get this cd and get it now!!!

UP!side Down

There are some singers for whom there is no middle ground; you either love them full-heartedly or hate them with a purple passion. Then there are those that hold a lot of promise on the one hand and disappointment on the other. Shania Twain, despite selling millions upon millions of albums over the last ten years, falls into this latter camp for me. Her 2002 album UP! shows why.

I won't begrudge the fact that she's sold all those albums or that she gets her records played on both country or pop radio stations (though on this latter point she isn't exactly unique). But I have the suspicion that Shania often tailors her albums SPECIFICALLY for radio airplay and publicity instead of just making an album as an artistic statement and letting the public take it from there like all the great female singers of the past have done. You get catchy titles on UP! like the title cut, "In My Car (I'll Be The Driver)", "I'm Gonna Getcha Good", "Nah!", and "Ka-Ching!", but there just doesn't seem to be a whole lot of substance in there, and the glossy production values of her husband Mutt Lange don't do enough to cover it over.

Probably the most controversial move was to have all of UP!'s 19 songs put on one disc with straight or nearly-straight country arrangements, and the same songs on another disc with pop arrangements. Whether this was Shania's idea, or Mutt's, or both, it obviously worked in terms of commercial success. Artistically, however, I'm not nearly as sure as others are; to me, it's more of a gimmick.

In the future, it would do well for Shania and her husband to figure out what made the records of some of Shania's favorite singers--Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, for example--work as well as they did. It's not just the craft or the production or the songs, it's all of those PLUS soul. Can Shania make an album of that scope? I think it's more than possible. UP! just isn't that kind of album, however.
