Description: There's not a big precedent for German bands succeeding in the United States, the '80s bombast-rock of the Scorpions notwithstanding. Rammstein, however, may be the macho men to get the job done, at least in a concert setting. Decidedly Teutonic and militant in sound and lyrics--they sing in German and their commanding semi-industrial metal is compelling--Rammstein garnered rock-radio airplay for the catchy sing-along "Du Hast," which translates here as "You Hate" and bears a striking musical resemblance to the Golden Earring tune "Twilight Zone." While
Sehnsucht's 11 songs are solid, it's the live shows where everything gels. There, KISS pyrotechnics and disturbing NIN-like images, for example, complement Rammstein's forceful music. Without the visual stimuli,
Sehnsucht (which means "longing") is still a strong effort, but live is where the album's Germanic gems really shine.

Reviews:
Definitely check out
Rammstein have become legends in their own field, creating music that's not industrial, or metal, yet a cross-breed of both. If you like heavy, head-bobbing music, you'll like Sehnsucht, and basically any other Rammstein album. Don't be turned away by the german vocals. They are what makes Rammstein, who they are, and translations are available if you look for them...
Sehnsucht
I can't really find a single word to describe this album. The only band I listen to that inspires comparisons is OOMPH!, and that's quite a long stretch itself. I bought this album a few weeks ago on impulse after finding myself addicted to the mysterious single "Du Hast" (and I see I'm not the only one...) and although I didn't care for it at first, it grew on me within a day.
The sound of Rammstein is definitely original. As far as I know there is no other band that sounds like them, despite the fact that there are several other German industrial/alternative bands in the music scene. Rammstein is, of course, the biggest of these, and rightfully so. Although many refer to the music as "silly" or "meaningless", many also fail to recognize the dark underbelly these songs possess. I don't know German at all, but I've read several lyrical adaptations and it's easier to understand what the songs are written about.
My favorite song of Sehnsucht is track 10, "Eifersucht". The song is driven by heavy guitars (mainly palm muted chords) and dark raspy vocals. I believe the song is about jealousy, as reviewers have stated before. Of course we have the singles "Du Hast" and "Engel", both catchy in their own right, and both featuring guest vocals from a woman named Bobo. The title tracks is very well done, giving us a taste of the industrial/nu-metal sound Rammstein create - and they do it quite well. The synthesizers aren't mindblowing, but they fit the songs decently (despite a few unnecessary and rather annoying intros). There's also a good bonus track (on my version anyways) entitled "Stripped", which I believe is a cover and features English lyrics and more melodic vocal lines.
Comparisons to Slipknot/Korn/System of a Down are highly unwarranted. Rammstein belong in a class of their own, but if you listened to them, you would already know that.
8.5/10
the perfect intro to the german industrial metal group
"du hast" is their most popular song, but it isn't even the best one on this incredibly strong cd. All of the tracks are really good, and even if you don't know german it is easy to dig what these guys do. They are kind of insane, sort of, and they really attract attention this way. It is easy to see why they got such big popularity in the states. If you have heard "Du Hast" and liked it, you should get this cd. Also, get Mutter and Reise, Reise which are both very strong efforts by this band also. Their music is consistently good on all their albums.
