Great stuff, but I wanted more
Queen At The BBC (1995.) A collection of Queen BBC sessions.
It seems that just about every great British classic rock bands has done some BBC session recordings. This is easily characterized by the nunber of BBC session CDs available on the market today for these bands. Among the bands that recorded sessions of these sorts was Queen. With all their studio and live albums, it's easy to overlook this release. How does it measure up? Read on for my review of Queen At The BBC (the album was originally called Queen At The Beeb, but no one in America knows what the hell that means, hence the name change.)
To put it simply, what this CD gives you is a collection of alternative versions of very early Queen tunes. All but a very small number of these tracks came from the band's first album. It you like the first two Queen albums, you're going to love this collection. Many of these alternative versions of the songs actually surpass their album counterparts in terms of sheer quality. However, many of the songs do come off sounding a bit too similar to the album versions. Likewise, this is by no means a complete collection of Queen's BBC recordings - the band did several additional sessions in the years that would immediately follow. But what is here rocks, plain and simple, and no fan of early Queen should be without this release.
Sadly, this album isn't as readily available as other releases from Queen. This is a real shame, because it's some of the band's best material. Hopefully the album will be reissued, along with some of the sessions they did later on in their career - THAT would make this album even better.
All right, I'm gonna stop now before I start to ramble. Did you like the first two Queen albums? If you liked them, you're going to love this release. If you didn't like those two albums, it's safe to say you're not gonna enjoy this release too much. But take my advice - consider holding off and seeing if a deluxe version is released.
just a sample of the greatest to come from 1973
this is a great sample from 1973 for any queen collector.i own the import version which is titled "QUEEN AT THE BEEB" which is the same as the usa release the covers are just different.a must have for any long time queen fan.the tracks are on the Queen 1 album.
Queen's BBC is great but leaves you hungry for more
Queen's album Queen at the BBC was released in the US in March of 1995.
The album was previously released on a small label in the UK as Queen at the Beeb.
However, Hollywood Records in the US and Canada remastered and repackaged the album as Queen at the BBC.
This consists of some of the band's first appearances on British radio. They did more in late 1974 and 1977.
Also, their legendary Christmas concert in 1975 at The Hammersmith Odeon was recorded by the BBC and broadcasted.
For the heavy Queen fan, one who owns all the albums, Queen At The BBC will make an excellent purchase, especially if they're fans of the band's early material like myself.
The album provides fascinating previously never-before-heard outside of the UK versions of some of Queen's finest songs on their 1973 debut.
In fact, it has all the best songs from that album as well as one song from the yet to be released at the time second album.
True, some of the songs are very different, often better than the album versions.
Modern Time Rock n' Roll is better than the studio version. Keep Yourself Alive is slightly heavier than the album version, as is Liar which makes this already superb song even better. Most of all, the heavy rocker Son and Daughter was extended by four minutes of guitar jamming with a precursor to Brian's guitar solo spots that would become a trademark of Queen's live performances. The riffs there will seem familiar to most Queen fans from Brighton Rock but actually originated on the Smile song Blag. Great King Rat is my favorite on this disc.
Despite the fact it didn't chart, this is a must for us hardcore Queen fans!
