Description: When MC Lyte rapped "Beat biter / Dope style taker / Tell you to your face you ain't nothing but a faker," she wasn't referring to Puff Daddy, but those words may have echoed in the brains of many non-NY producers--especially those from New Orleans and the Bay Area--upon hearing the bad boy don's second solo effort, Forever. For much of the latter part of the '90s, many New York rappers have included a couple of token G-funk or bounce-influenced tracks on their albums, but on Forever, Puff takes it to extremes, with almost half the album falling into that category. One would think that Puff's lazy, unskilled drawl would fit perfectly with the foreign sonics, but instead, his mumbling is more blatant, twitching erratically like the proverbial fish out of water, especially on cuts like "What You Want" and "Satisfy You" (where he loops the Luniz' classic "I Got 5 On It"). Where he sticks to the usual plan, he pulls it off steadily, and on "Journey Through the Life," a powerful posse cut with Nas, Beanie Sigel, and Lil' Kim, he's created a NY thug cut par excellence. Just goes to show you can't teach an old producer new beats--even if he pays royally for them. --Jon Caramanica

Reviews:

Bad boy for life!

I just want to say that all the haters of Bad boys and more specifically p.diddy please explain to me why?Hes the most respected man in the business and whether any of you like it or not he makes nothing but big hits. And for everyone that thinks Diddy made all his money from Biggie your just making exuses. Bad boy is worth approximately 500 million dollars and you think only B.I.G made all that money.Think again people hes been gone for 7 years now and their still making money.

As for the album "Forever" It is a fairly good album however not a classic like "No Way Out"was. Most of the tracks are hot and its a cd for everyone not just rap/hip-hop lovers

HEARD IT ALL BEFORE ON NO WAY OUT

IF YOU LOVED NO WAY OUT, THERE'S LITTLE REASON FOR YOU NOT TO LIKE FOREVER, CAUSE IT'S JUST MORE OF THE SAME STUFF. MUCH OF THE ALBUM IS EITHER BORING OR TIRING. BUT, THE ALBUM SHOWS A FEW SIGNS OF LIFE DESPITE ITS RAMPANT MEDIOCRITY. THE BETTER SONGS OF THE ALBUM INCLUDE ''FAKE THUGS DEDICATION'', ''GANGSTA SH**'', ''ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES'', AND ''JOURNEY THROUGH THE LIFE''. IF YOU WANNA HEAR SOME GOOD RAP MUSIC, YOU WON'T FIND TOO MUCH OF THAT HERE. BUT, IF YOU JUST WANNA HEAR MORE OF THE COMMERCIALIZED RAP MUSIC, THEN GO AHEAD AND CHECK THIS OUT.

Okay, but lacks oomph of the other two

Puff Daddy's second album was okay, but it lacks the oomph of the '97 album and the funky songs of the 2001 album. I recall the one where he samples the Luniz' I Got 5 on It for one song. But the album is a mixed bag, where some numbers sound too much like No Way Out's leftovers and some grooves sound too 1998 for a '99 release. 5 to 5 1/2 years later, there aren't a lot of memorable songs from this album.
