Description: Nirvana may have been the biggest thing in the music world in the early '90s, but the trio maintained an uncommon devotion to core fans who knew them when they were still sleeping in a van. Fending off the adoration of punk-rock dabblers in the media and their audience while simultaneously welcoming stalwart underground-music supporters, Kurt Cobain did things on his own terms--until it all came crashing down. A decade after Cobain's 1994 suicide and the band's demise,
With the Lights Out remains true to the ethos that defined the band and the alt-rock revolution that rose and fell with them.
Eschewing the standard hits-sprinkled-with-rarities mix, this lovingly compiled three-CD, one-DVD collection is made up almost entirely of previously unreleased selections. The handful of previously heard tracks are obscurities along the lines of the group's cover of "Here She Comes Now," recorded for a 1990 indie-rock tribute to the Velvet Underground. But it's not the B-sides and compilation oddities that define this idiosyncratic set; rather, its spirit is captured in the bedroom demos, radio performances, and sloppy amateur video recordings that catch Cobain and cohorts developing from just another punk- and metal-inspired bunch of grunge rockers pounding away in the bass player's mom's living room into a band that defined an era. --Steven Stolder

Reviews:
A Truly Amazing Listen
I honestly don't know how the more casual Nirvana fan would react to this album. I can only review it from the perspective of a nearly-rabid fan. Nirvana was the band that saved me from the monotony of boyband fandom, and turned me on to real music. They completely changed the course of rock-and-roll, mostly for the better. They were definitly about the music, not the image. Kurt was a man like his songs, a jumble of contridictions, but he loved music above all else, and was terrified of "selling out".
Anyway, I digress. For the true Nirvana fan, this set is a godsend, an invigorating yet haunting collection that showcases both the character and versitility of the band. It is so satisfying to listen to the band grow, and to hear Kurt's writing mature through the years. The most recent recording are indead the most beautiful and the most saddening, as we get a glimpse of what may have been. Soundgarden and Alice in Chains are both great bands, but neither could ever compare to the strength and talent of Nirvana, who truly defined an age.
For those not so familiar with Nirvana, I would recommend purchasing 'Nevermind' and 'MTV Unplugged' before spending the money on this album. However, I'm fairly certain a great deal of you will be back for this one soon. Well worth the money!
NIRVANA SMELLS LIKE CRAP
I love Nirvana one of my favorite bands. But when I got this for christmas uhhhhhhh the box...stank. The quality of the music stank. The DVD had only one music video and it wasnt the most famous one (Smells like teen spirit). Most of the DVD was just home footage and it gets really boring after a while. If you want a real box set go out and buy all of there albums. Dont waste your money on this. The box set scores points for its cool booklet inside and if you put your fingers on the back of the dark set it will do this cool trick where it well turn white where you can see everything so it kind of tyes in with th name with th lighs out.Nirvana ROCKSSS but this bow set SUCKS!!!
Okay? And?
I don't see why everyone is in Nirvana's ass so much. They started a whole new movement and I respect them for what they did...but their music isn't f*king spectacular or the best music Ive ever heard in my life. I guess if I was the age I am now in the early 90's then I would've understood better. But with where music is going today, it is important that we look back on Nirvana and realize where it has been. If they were still around today, I think they wouldn't be as good. But they were good for their time. With spontaneous and depressing lyrics...why were people so surprised that Kurt killed himself? Did you really think he sung songs like that for fun? Good band for their time but not a good band for today. I will always respect Nirvana and listen to them from time to time. I am in no way dissing this legendary band. This box set is just for die hard lifetime fans only.
