Description: Like the Violent Femmes and Concrete Blonde, Midnight Oil has released a few all-around terrific albums and several others with just a couple great songs. Collecting the familiar radio hits ("Blue Sky Mine," "Forgotten Years," "Beds Are Burning") and standout tracks from less worthy CDs ("Surf's Up Tonight," from 1996's otherwise forgettable Breathe the Australian rock band's highly political first career retrospective is a good starting point for new fans. This collection could have delved more into the classic albums, such as 1988's Diesel and Dust, but then every working band has to maintain the illusion that its later work is also vital. --Steve Knopper

Reviews:

A great MO compilation for new fans

'20,000 Watt R.S.L' is a nifty CD release spanning the hits and well known songs of Midnight Oil's later years. Track 1 to 12 are of well known and popular hits such as; The Power & The Passion, The Dead Heart, Blue Sky Mine and Beds Are Burning. Tracks 13 to 18 are hits from later works of Midnight Oil in there 20 odd years of performing.

It's a great CD for new fans of this great Australian fair dinkum band who sing songs that feel most precious to them. This is also a good keepsake for any Midnight Oil Fan, old or new. Whilst we may not always agree with the views of MO, they always have put their views across in such an entertaining medium.

Great

This is a great compilation and theres not a bad track on it. To Heathcliff an earlier reviewer thers is a lot more to completing your Australian Triology than Midnight Oil, Men at Work and Inx have a look on Amazon at some of these other Australian acts-AC/DC,Little River Band,Air Supply,Cold Chisel,The Church,The Easybeats,Rose Tattoo,The Angels,Silverchair,Living End,Hoodo Gurus,Hunters And Collectors,Nick Cave.

not too shabby

this is the australian band's greatest hits collection, and while i like listening to the actual LPs a bit more--because their generally very cohesive albums with steady thematic undertones--this gives a satisfactory view of their career on the charts, including all the hits and cult-favorites. there are some positively scorching numbers on here...songs so full of passion that even their biggest hit, "beds are burning," pales in comparison and seems almost flakey. great liner notes tell the inspiring true story of the band's rise to fame and influence.
