Description: Perhaps the true test of a classic is this: something that's commonplace now but at the time appeared revolutionary. The notion that a female R&B singer could be as informed by the Real Roxanne as she was by Aretha Franklin, that she could give love to the streets and the roughnecks--while still delivering soul-drenched love songs that came from that wounded womanly space--was, in a word, groundbreaking. It was the sound of the New Jills, and of a new genre, aptly called hip-hop soul. Featuring production from a then-upstart Puffy, and a collection of songs that alternately swagger and seduce--"You Remind Me," "Real Love," "Reminisce"--What's the 411? may not be Blige's finest work (that honor may go to its moody follow-up, My Life). But its ghetto-fied grooves dominated the radio then, and they still sound fierce today, even with a slew of lesser imitators attempting to do what the rough and ready Blige did so effortlessly back in the day. --Amy Linden

Reviews:

changed hip hop r&b

This album changed the game. Put r&b and hip-hop together like never before.

Three words to describe the Queen of Hip Hop Soul...

...Tough but subtle.

"What's the 411?" on this album? It's a CLASSIC. A must have for your listening pleasure.

While her street, ghetto roots puts out a 1-2-3 punch in her upbeat songs, it is her slow ballads songs that showcases why she is the "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul".

Her toughness throughout her life can be heard through the lyrics of her upbeat songs. And when she sings it, you better watch out. Because she is going to be throwing 'bows left to right. And you might just get knocked out if you stand in her way.

In her slower ballads, just sit back and relax and listen as her timely lyrics, along with her voice, soothes away the pain from a long day. It's almost as if you can see right through her soul as she eases it away.

Her royal highness still reigns supreme today with her songs as she continues to sit atop of her throne of her loyal subjects who continue to support Queen Blige.

All Hail the Queen!

What's The 411 With Mary's First Album?

What's The 411? (1992)

At this time in Mary j. blige's life she was having her ups and downs. She even had a relationship with Jodeci's "K-Ci "but she still wasn't happy around this time Mary was doing drugs she was stressed. Overall the album was a success! Mary recreated "Sweet Thing "originally sang by Chaka Khan. From my opinion I think Mary did a great job on the vocal arrangement in the song. Also a hit on the album was "Real Love". This song had more of a hip-hop feel to it but to me that proved that Mary could do it all. "You Remind Me "was another hit on the album. Mary would later have a remix to it with Greg Nice. One of my favorite songs by Mary j. Blige would have to be "Reminisce ". It has a nice sound to it and it's a song you can listen to with the one you love. "Love No Limit "had more of a jazzy side to it but still R&B soul. One of my favorite duets was "I Don't Want To Do Anything" I think it was beautiful seeing to people devoted to each other work together. Mary has many other songs on their like "Changes I've been Going Through" which was later sampled by Mya. Also many more and trust me the album is great, we need more songs like "Slow Down" and more.
