Description: During one of the "interludes" on My Life, Keith Murray is rapping about "Grab your cranium for my ultimatum," when someone in the studio control booth asks producer Chucky Thompson, "Hey, Chuck, put on some of that smooth [stuff]." Murray disappears; the dreamy synth chords of Blige's title track emerge, and her sultry voice moans with a combination of weary loneliness and unslaked desire. The ballad which follows is "smooth" but never slick, for the singer's sinuous, extended notes confess the blues even as they yearn for something better. It's tempting to see this little scenario--the rapper being turned off in favor of the soul diva--as a repudiation of hip-hop in favor of old-fashioned R&B. An honest listen to this album, however, makes such an interpretation impossible. Blige does no actual rapping herself on her long-awaited second outing, but the sound of "My Life" would have been impossible without hip-hop. The results confirm the promise of Blige's '92 debut; she is the premier soul diva of the hip-hop generation. --Geoffrey Himes

Reviews:

A superb, timeless album

This album should be required listening for all these clueless modern day singers and "Idol" contestants who think that singing R&B is about wailing and oversinging.

Here Mary's singing runs the gamut from mellow to dramatic but ALWAY in control and always funky. This is just a phenomenal album.

The producers should get full credit too. The tracks are all tight and even today this album sounds as relevant and contemporary as the day it came out 10 years ago. That is quite a feat in hip-hop music!

My Life

My Life is a soundtrack to the mid-90s'. Mary made this album sound like her diary. This is her personal album. This album is 70s' soul meets 90s'R&B. This album is filled with R&B ballads and urban grooves(mid-tempo). This album is a milestone in her career. This album has been certified 3x Platinum. This album is a definite for an R&B fan.

She worked with Chucky Thompson,Herb Middleton,Puff Daddy,Nashieem Myrick,Mr.Dalvin.

Mary is attacking issues that has evolved around her since her childhood and adolescent days. Mary sings about pain just like Faith Evans.

She Is The Queen

MJB is my very favorite artist in the world. I perfer to listen t her any day over the likes of Beyonce and Ashanti any day. Don't get me wrong i like Ashanti and i like Beyonce a little from time to time. But My Life is the album that speaks to me from start to finish it is a classic. if it was a rap album it would get Fove mics. there aren't enough star to rate this album it shows why indeed she is the QUEEN!!!!
