Description: Linda Ronstadt was America's sweetheart of the '70s, because she was able to combine a pretty face, a pretty voice and a safe personality. Her songs might be full of big notes and high emotions, but they satisfied every predictable expectation of a love ballad or good-time rocker. Mariah Carey is America's sweetheart of the '90s for the exact same reasons. Music Box topped the Billboard album charts, yielding number-one singles like "Dreamlover" and "Hero." The titles, one a hollow Minnie Riperton knock-off and the other a stiff Barbra Streisand imitation, are tip-offs to Carey's reliance on untethered fantasy (she's the fantasizer in the lyrics and the fantasy object in the videos). These songs, coªwritten and co-produced like most of the album by Walter Anasieff and Carey herself, are constructed to show off her dizzying soprano, not to provide an original approach to a well-worn subject. Even when she gets a strong ballad to sing, like her current singles--Babyface's "Never Forget You" or Badfinger/Nilsson's "Without You"--she overdoes the self-pity bit so much that the song loses its dramatic tension. --Geoffrey Himes

Reviews:

I love this album!

Once Mariah had released her third album which was MTV Unplugged, on 11 September 1993 she released her fourth, but little did she know this album would be the biggest selling of her whole career... The album did better than the singles did on the Charts, however the singles were uplifting to listen to and there were more strong vocals from Mariah.

This album is another great effort from Mariah that has something for everyone in it - you can't hate it! From the four great singles which all hit the Top 10, one was a #1 in the UK, to great disco songs like Now That I Know and beautiful ballads like Music Box and Just To Hold You Once Again, this album is clearly one of Mariah's best.

1.) Dreamlover - This was a great choice for single release from this Mariah album. The song is very uplifting and uptempo and I like to jump around to it! It hit #1 in the US and #9 in the UK where the single spanned 10 weeks on the Top 75. (5/5)

2.) Hero - This was the second single from the album Music Box after the opening single Dreamlover (the first single). The song is outstanding because of Mariah's strong and high vocals and the single hit #1 in the US. The single hit #7 in the UK where it spent 15 weeks on the Top 75. (5/5)

3.) Anytime You Need A Friend - This maybe my favourite single release from this album. It is so uplifting and a pleasure to listen to! Mariah's vocals stay strong as always and they are great and powerful. The single was not a US #1 but it hit #8 in the UK and spanned 10 weeks on the Top 75. (5/5)

4.) Music Box - For me this song is an album highlight. The music sounds like a Music Box (as if it was not obvious) which means that you can hear Mariah's vocals more, as this is just a ballad and the song doesn't have as much beat in as the songs we have listened to so far. I think the lyrics are also excellent. (5/5)

5.) Now That I Know - This is another album highlight for me but I have loads! The music is very disco style and sounds great to jump around to! The lyrics are great again and so are Mariah's vocals - but when are they not!? (5/5)

6.) Never Forget You - I don't listen to this song as much as some of the other songs on the album, therefore I would be less fond with it. However, the song is still great and Mariah's voice stays strong like all times on this album. What is not to like!? (4/5)

7.) Without You - This song is Mariah's best-selling single up to date and I can clearly see why! It was not a #1 in the US which suprised when but it did hit #1 in the UK where it stayed there for four weeks and altogether spanned 14 weeks on the Top 75. Mariah hits the high notes and proves she really can sing on this song. (5/5)

8.) Just To Hold You Once Again - This may be my favourite song on the whole album and it is defimately another highlight. It is a really great ballad and near the end of the song, Mariah goes higher in the chorus and really hits the high notes, like the previous track. This song may be a highlight of Mariah's whole career! (5/5)

9.) I've Been Thinking About You - This is another disco-influenced song from the album. I don't listen to it as much as Now That I Know, but it is another excellent song where Mariah's vocals are still going strong. The lyrics are also great and Mariah once again proves she is a great songwriter! (5/5)

10.) All I've Ever Wanted - I think this is another great song from the album Music Box that would have been great single material, like most of the songs from this album. It is another great ballad that Mariah pulls off yet again. The lyrics are also great. (5/5)

11.) Everything Fades Away (Bonus Track) - This song works well to finish the album. It may not be as good as other songs from the album, but it is still great! Even though it is Five and a half minutes long, I still love it because Mariah pulls the song off really well and the lyrics are, yet again, great. (4/5)

Overall Grade - 53/55

Overall, this album is a great one. You have to take your hat off to Mariah because her voice is amazing and she is a great songwriter. If you have a hat on now, please take it off to her! The album Music Box was a great effort that hit #1 in the US and the UK. It entered the UK Charts at #1 straight away and spanned a rather impressive and amazing 77 weeks on the Chart. If you like Mariah or not, please go and pick up this album. It is great!

Mariah at her vocal peak!

In the order of her best albums, I would put this at third (her debut being first and "Butterfly" being 2nd) but this album was Mariah at her commercial and vocal peak. The number do not lie: this sold a little over 25 million copies worldwide! In addition, her singles from the album stayed at no.1 for a combined total of 13 weeks! Of course, she topped that alone with her single "One Sweet Day" from "Daydream" that was no.1 for 16 weeks! Vocally I haven't heard her belt out a song with blow away voice like hers since "Without You"(the best single from the album) which was her first international hit. The Voice popped up occasionally sincebut she was at the height of her vocal powers on this album. A good example of the Voice would be "Hero" which is sappy (not in a bad way though) but incredibly inspiring. And then my favorite song on the album "Dreamlover" (I love the background sound of it)which was a huge hit and also hinted toward the direction she would take with "Daydream" and "Butterfly".

Mariah's Still on Fiya

Mariah's still On Fiya

Mariah Carey did it again be making one of the greatest albums of 1993. Music Box is for the people who like R&B mixed with a little bit of pop. Columbia & Sony records along with Mariah released Music Box August 30, 1993. You could still get Music Box for $14.99 but if you want to buy it on the Internet than its $18.99. Even though it doesn't have any bonus c.d's or DVD's it's still a great C.D.

Surprisingly since she first appeared in the early 90's she's still making great music today. Music Box was a big hit in 1993 and people still like today. Personally I like her old stuff better than her new stuff. Music Box didn't really have a different style but some songs were different than the ones on her albums before. So some of the songs on Music Box didn't surprise me.

When I first heard music Box I was blown away by mostly her voice. I noticed that her lyrics were a little more mature and fit her better. When I listened to it again and a few times after that I realized that this C.D grew on me very quickly. I didn't get sick of it at all (except some of the songs). After awhile of listening to Music Box I started to pick out a couple of really great songs; one of them is #10 "All I've Ever Wanted". The lyrics are outstanding and it's sung just so beautifully. Another good track is #4 Music Box because it's so calm and it's like the perfect lullaby. I think the lyrics were o.k. Of coarse the song that I've heard a million and one times but never got sick of is #2 "Hero". That is a really well written song and never should be forgotten. I think it's an inspiring song saying there's a hero inside of everybody.

As you know a lot of good comes with a little bad. Some tracks I didn't think were that great was #9 "I've Been Thinking About You". It's kind of a immaturely written song saying you love your best friend. It just doesn't seem like a Mariah Carey song. I also think #1 "Dream lover" wasn't that great either. Even though it was her 1st hit off the album I don't really like it. It just doesn't click with me. I think the whole song is just bad. I've found out there is 1 bonus track, I just never heard it.

I would say Mariah Carey compares to Whitney Houston but Whitney needs to step down and let Mariah take over.

Fens will defiantly be happy with this album. She was on her way on up in 1993 and now she on top.
