Description: Mariah Carey's ninth album has been touted as her comeback album, coming as it does after the belly flop that produced the overwrought soundtrack to her ill-fated film,
Glitter. With
Charmbracelet, Carey goes out of her way to fix all those aesthetic glitches, tempering the overblown vocals, simpering lyrics, and uninspired funk covers of her last album and returning to what she does best--showcasing her magnificent five-octave voice and pillaging her lift history for inspiration. After her breakup with superstar Luis Miguel, MTV meltdown, hospitalization for exhaustion, and the death of her father, Carey had a lot of emotional baggage to sift through. She has and, as a result, has created an inspired and diverse 15-song opus that finds her skipping from an impassioned Aretha Franklin-like gospel ("Saving Grace") to an impish cover of Def Leppard's power ballad "Bringin' on the Heartbreak." Though he's not mentioned by name, rapper Eminem is given a pointed drubbing on "Clowns" for hinting in the press and in his own song "Superman" of a relationship with Carey. There hasn't been such a compelling musical soap opera since Carly Simon's '70s roman à clef, "You're So Vain." However, the disc's most inspiring moment comes on "Sunflowers for Alfred Roy," a wistful elegy for her father that recounts his final days in his hospital room. This is a stunning return to form for Carey.

Reviews:
after the glitter... there is a charmbracelet
Mariah Carey is undoubtedly a star in her own right. She dominated the charts throughout the 1990's with hits; such as "Vision of Love," "Dreamlover," and "One Sweet Day." Her hit making ability seemed to halt with the release of the motion picture soundtrack for Glitter. Mariah was the star of the ill-fated movie and the soundtrack wasn't much better. With her subsequent breakdown due to "exhaustion," any other star's career would have come to an abrupt end; however Mariah is above that. Charmbracelet realigns Mariah with fans' expectations.
The more recent of Mariah's releases tend to have 3 types of songs: (1) the sultry ballad; (2) the rap/sung combinations; and (3) a 1980's cover song.
"Through the Rain," "The One," and "Subtle Invitation" are exquisite examples of her ability to relay emotion through song. At worst, each listener can find some relational content in her ballads. Everyone has gone through heartbreak and renewed love. Mariah shows both sides on Charmbracelet.
Starting with her CD releases in the late 1990's, Mariah began including guest rap artists. She added Ol Dirty Bastard's rap stylings to her single, "Fantasy." She included the decade's hottest rapper, Jay-Z, on "Heartbreaker." And she included the West Coast rap artist, Snoop Dogg, on "Crybaby." She maintains tradition on Charmbracelet. Cam'ron is prominently featured on "Oh Boy (I Need You)." And "You Got Me" features Jay-Z and Freeway.
Not to be forgotten, Mariah does indeed include a 1980's cover song. She takes on Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" and turns this hard rock classic into a lush ballad. She gives this aged classic new life and introduces it to a new audience.

simply amazing
charm bracelet had such a brilliant album concept and the tracks were so beautifully done, mostly ballads, some r&b/hip hop ballads(you have to hear them to get it) and several hip hop collaborations that could have been left off. I just love how mariah sings and raps at the same time in several songs on this CD. I think this CD is her most personal one to date and she seemed to be dealing with depression at the time, this album is very uplifting to say the least and can inspire many to keep on going. Along with this CD, I would also recommend janet's velvet rope
