Description: Anyone who's caught Manu Chao and his band Radio Bemba Sound System at one of their live gigs will testify that the Parisian troubadour sure knows how to throw a party. This live album draws on reggae, salsa, and Latin pop songs from Chao's first two excellent solo albums (
Clandestino and
Proxima Estación: Esperanza) as well as joyous gems from his time leading the more punk-tinged Mano Negra. While the styles vary as often as the languages (Chao flits from Spanish to English to French as he translates his life as a global nomad into his music), the common thread is a sense of vitality and hope. From the uplifting reggae of "Bienvenida a Tijuana" to the African pop and salsa of "Casa Babylon," this album showcases Chao's role as the pied piper of multiculturalism, leading his crowd on a (literally) merry dance. And it's the crowd that really makes these 29 tracks come into their own. You can almost picture the mob waving, cheering, blowing whistles, shouting into megaphones, and generally having the wildest time this side of Rio Mardi Gras. A great flashback for those who have seen Chao live and a perfect introduction for recent converts.

Reviews:
Blown Away
As evidenced by these reviews, you either love this album 5 stars or hate it. What you get here is high energy and anthemic reggae and other assorted dance songs recorded all over the world. The whole idea of the album being repetetive is non-sense, reggae and ska music have a consistent sound and just because the people at the concerts are obviously enjoying themselves and screaming "hey, hey, hey..." does not mean this is a badly recorded album.
Buy this album and add some color to your life. BOOM 5 stars!
Exactly as the live Manu Chao == great !!
I've seen many bad or regular reviews on this record, however many of them by anglosaxon people or people who have never seen Manu Chao live. This is the real thing!!! Manu's recitals are just like this !! The studio versions are sure incredible pieces of work, but I already had a different idea about Manu through live records of Mano Negra. Seeing him perform live is an amazing display of vibrating and contagious energy, and I really thank this record for reminding me this.
If you wanted a non-repetitive-just-like-the-record Manu, then you never understood him. Check back on his old records, listen carefully to the samples and rythms and beats, try to understand that really not much changes from song to song, or disc to disc for that matter. Manu is great in studio and great live, two different greats however. It's just the repetitive stuff that jumps from the discs to stage and unifies his art production.
The flow of this disc is quite good, I can tell though just from hearing it that the songs don't belong to the same recital because 2 to 3 straight hours with Manu live are something to remember. This is a good point made by others, but it's not enough to keep this cd from becoming a classic.
Seize the opportunity if you think you'll never be able to see Manu perform ! Believe me, all the hey hey heys really rock your body when you're dancing like crazy with 5 thousand people. This really works for us latin people !!!

energy and rythm and color make this an awesome album. Manu's voice is perfect you can smell the sweat thought the music. Not for the faint of heart or for someone looking for an easy listen. Get ready to get taken away by the ska/reggae/spanish/world feel that dosent let up for an instant.
