You Must Love Me begins straight away with just Madonna's singing voice. There are no instruments, except for Madonna's voice where she sings, "Where do we go from here? This isn't where we intended to be. We had it all. You believed in me. I believed in you. Certainties disappear. What do we do for our dream to survive? How do we keep our passions alive as we used to?" It's a short verse in which Madonna's vocals are extraordinary. Vocal lessons for the role of Eva Peron in the movie had strengthened Madonna's voice, and it definitely shows here. Madonna then sings the best part of the song - the bridge, "Deep in my heart I'm concealing. Things that I'm longing to say. Scared to confess what I'm feeling. Frightened you'll slip away. Madonna then sings the simple chorus which consists of "You must love me. You must love me." She then goes onto the second verse, "Why are you at my side? How can I be any use to you now? Give me a chance and I'll let you see how nothing has changed." Again, a simple verse with wonderful violins and a great piano. Madonna then repeats the bridge and the chorus, before the song dies down and finishes. It's a short song, but very sweet and original.
The video to You Must Love Me is the performance of the song from the film. Madonna sits in a darkened room as Eva Peron singing her heart out whilst a number of women play violins and the piano. It's a classy video, and Madonna looks particularly wonderful. All in all, this is a great and diverse song from Madonna that - while it may not have done very well in the charts - contributed to the sales of the album significantly and improved Madonna's status amongst more serious critics.
