Description: A quintessential '80s pop artifact, Madonna's third album was a huge musical leap forward and ranks with
Like a Prayer and
Ray of Light in the top echelon of her works. Only the title track (a bit too obviously a '60s girl-group homage) and the fine-but-nothing-special "Jimmy Jimmy" slightly lower the quality bar. Most of the songs share a jittery dance-pop sound, edgy, distracted, and nerve-jangling but simultaneously invigorating and exhilarating and almost dangerously giddy--a perfect soundtrack for the mid-'80s. Highlights include the hedonist's credo of "Where's the Party," the subtle and pretty Latin pastiche "La Isla Bonita," and, towering above all, three stunning mega-hits. "Papa Don't Preach," with its gorgeous pseudo-classical strings intro, is a sumptuous airwaves banquet, as Madonna wrestles with the have-the-baby-or-give-it-up dilemma (abortion's not in the picture) in newly gritty tones. "Open Your Heart"'s marriage of jitter-pop and wistful melody underscores the singer's yearning but forceful stance ("You better open your heart to me, buster"). And "Live to Tell" is a riveting ballad, lushly melodic yet spare and haunting--a place, as the song says, where beauty lives.

Reviews:
5 Top Five Singles from this Album, including 3 Number Ones
This was Madonna's third studio album, containing 9 tracks:
1. Papa don't preach.- A number one song for two weeks, big controversy about the theme of the song, the baby is her boyfriend or is she pregnant? 5/5
2. Open your heart.- Stayed at number 1 one week, very sexy video in a brothel. 5/5
3. White Heat.- Odd song with a rap, not a personal favorite. 3/5
4. Live to tell.- Theme from the a movie that I am not remember, one of the very first successful balad, vey catchy song. 5/5
5. Where's the party.- Not a single but a personal favorite. Lift me up every time I hear it. 5/5
6. True Blue.- A number 2 song that has trascende time, one of her best ballads. 5/5
7. La Isla bonita.- One of her first latin-inspirated songs, a personal favorite from her since has been played in all of her tours but the last one, top at number 4. 4/5
8. Jimmy Jimmy.- Catchy song. 3/5
9. Love makes the world go round.- Another dance song with a message. 3/5
The album worth for the 5 singles and Where's the party, she sure knows where!
How do you like that, boys?
Madonna's third album was a giant leap forward for her. She really improved as both a singer and a songwriter. This was the first album that she had a hand in writing all the songs. And what songs they are! Five of these songs were huge hits that everyone is familiar with; "Papa Don't Preach", "Open Your Heart", "Live to Tell", "True Blue" and "La Isla Bonita". These are some of the best pop songs of the era. And the other four songs here are also good. "White Heat" uses being arrested as a metaphor for giving in to love, and features actual dialogue from the movie White Heat (I love both the song and the movie). "Where's the Party" is a fun song about... partying. "Jimmy Jimmy" is probably the most inconsequential song here, but it is still a fun song. "Love Makes the World Go Round" is a rather naive plea for peace, but it has a good beat and you can dance to it (if you can dance, which I can't). This was Madonna's first truly great album, and it's an essential purchase for all her fans.
No One Does It Better Than Madonna
This is Madonna, so what did you expect? This is a true classic and it will be remembered for many years to come. My personal favourites on this album are "Live To Tell", "True Blue" and "La Isla Bonita". This album has some great pop but the reason I did not give it 5 stars is because there are some pretty bad tracks on here like "White Heat" and "Jimmy Jimmy", and the album is way too short. Other than that, this is a great album from my favourite female artists, along with Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys. This woman is the reason that people like Britney Spears, Hilary Duff, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson and even Mariah Carey are around today doing their thing. I highly recommend this album to anyone looking for some true blue.
