Reviews:

A stunning Madonna classic in every sense of the word

Papa Don't Preach was the second single to be released from Madonna's massively successful third album, True Blue. The album went on to sell 20 million copies worldwide and produced Madonna's most mature and enjoyable music to date. Madonna had already proved with Live To Tell (the first single from this third album) that she could make excellent and mature music. She proved this even further when she released Papa Don't Preach. It went straight to No.1 in the UK in June 1986 and spent 14 weeks on the chart. It was also a US No.1, and her first single of five to reach No.1 in both the UK and US.

Papa Don't Preach opens with a superb violin arrangement, before breaking out with a classic beat. The drums are ever present, but the violins add that distressed feeling to the song, which is perfect for what the song's subject is about. Madonna then begins the first verse with, "Papa I know you are going to be upset, 'cos I was always your little girl, but you should know by now, I'm not a baby." The song is about an accidental teenage pregnancy that worries Madonna deeply. She dreads the day that she has to tell her father, who is against her even seeing the man who has got her pregnant. Madonna then sings a fantastic bridge before she moves into the epic chorus with the lyrics, "Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep. Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep, but I made up my mind - I'm keeping my baby, I'm gonna keep my baby!" Madonna then carries on singing her second verse, bridge and chorus, all while under the dramatic influence of the violin. The song then breaks into a glorious solo with just the violin. The song then starts up again with the lyrics, "Daddy, daddy if you could only see, just how good he's been treating me, you'd give us our blessing right now, 'cos we are in love...we are in love!" And from there on, the song continues with the fabulous choruses and Madonna's ever-determined effort to make her father see the positive side that she's pregnant.

The video to Papa Don't Preach is excellent. Madonna dances around in a black room with an awful boob-tube costume on and dreadful bleached hair. In other scenes, she gets to test out her acting skills by hanging with her boyfriend and friends, before going home to tell her father about her situation. The video finally ends with her father giving his approval of her pregnancy. Overall, Papa Don't Preach is a true Madonna classic that deserves all the success it received. Madonna's vocals are on top form as she belts out her emotions to her father - something that would've been unthinkable a year previously.

Great Song, not so remix

Reviewing this cd-single export for the extras only is not really worth the price if you are not a Madonna collector.

1. Papa don't preach (Extended Version).- Just about a minute longer than the original version, it seems that only added some nre noise and extended the rythm, nothing new.

2.- Ain't no big deal.- Dance song, for collectors only.

3.- Papa don't preach (LP Version).- The same version that in the album, so nothing new.

One of Madonna's worst 80's remixes

man, 80's extended remixes really oftentimes slaughtered the original songs. this remix just seems too hollow, if that makes any sense. I guess it's because they removed some of the original instruments from the album version, like the acoustic guitar solo during the instrumental break. all it is is beats. the reason to get this cd is for the non-album track "ain't no big deal"
