Description: Madonna became a star upon the release of this, her self-titled debut. But because her stardom was thanks largely to her videos, which found her dressed provocatively and rolling around on the floor, most folks were all too willing to look past the overall quality of the album itself. Even with its somewhat dated keyboard textures and mechanized drum sounds, the album holds up incredibly well. There's "Borderline," which exudes a certain naiveté, something rarely associated with Madonna; "Holiday," which is sweet and celebratory; and "Lucky Star" a dance-floor classic. Songs like "Everybody" and "Burning Up" split the difference between dance music and new wave, which was popular at the time. That latter tune, in fact, contains a line that could be seen as a ready indicator of all that was to follow in Madonna's storied career. "Unlike the others, I'll do anything," she sings. "I'm not the same / I have no shame." No kidding. --Daniel Durchholz

Reviews:

Dance and sing, get up and do your thing.

Ah yes, Madonna's first album. When this album first came out in 1983, I doubt that anybody thought that she would go on to be the top female recording artist of all time. I remember at the time a lot of people thought that Cyndi Lauper would end up being the bigger star of the two. Funny how things turn out. Madonna first album was a dance album with a sound typical of the early '80s. Of the eight songs on the album, five were released as singles. "Lucky Star", "Borderline" and "Holiday" are of course classic hits. "Burning Up" and "Everybody" were flop singles, but they still are great songs. As for the other three songs: "Think of Me" and "Physical Attraction" are good songs; and "I Know It" is not a very good song. Madonna's singing ability was not fully developed at this point. She could carry a tune, but she didn't have much range. Somewhat suprisingly, Madonna wrote five of the eight songs on the album. She wrote them by herself, unlike in the future when she almost always wrote with a collaborator. This was a solid debut album that was underrated by most people at the time, but nowadays it can almost be considered a classic.

ESSENTIAL MADONNA

The remastered version is excellent. They almost sound like brand new songs and not just it's been remastered. More than 20 years later this album does not sound dated. In fact all the songs that were released in the 80's are still played today, unlike the overated follow-up, LIKE A VIRGIN. In addition to the crisp old songs you get two extra remixed tracks. Essential to any music collection. FLAWLESS

Madonna - "Madonna"

(This is Madonna's 1983 self-titled album.)

01 "Lucky Star"

02 "Borderline"

03 "Burning Up"

04 "I Know It"

05 "Holiday"

06 "Think Of Me"

07 "Physical Attraction"

08 "Everybody"

Bonus Tracks -

09 "Burning Up" (12" Version)

10 "Lucky Star" ("New" Mix)

All of these songs are very good--honestly, this is a REALLY good effort for a debut singer who is still around today. Songs like "Holiday", "Borderline", "Lucky Star" and "Physical Attraction" are still memorable to this day with Madonna fans and even some non-Madonna fans. (e.g the song "Holiday".) There are 3 singles from this album from the UK. They are: "Holiday" which first charted at #6, then re-entered at #2 and when a re-issue of the single came out, it charted at #5 in the UK. "Lucky Star" (UK #14) and "Borderline" (which charted at a dull #56 but then it charted #2 later on) were also singles. "Everybody" and "Burning Up" were also singles, but not in the UK. A good album for Madonna fans and beginners!

Madonna's Original--And Best Album

I bought this album on cassette back in 1984 and it instantly became a favorite of mine. You know it's a good album when you don't at all feel compelled to fast forward through any songs. I never had to with this one. All the songs are fantastic. When I first saw her on TV (on "Solid Gold" around 1983) I didn't think she'd be a huge star, but when I bought this album a few months later, I realized that she would be.

I recently bought it on CD so I could rip the songs and put them on my MP3 player. I have to say I don't think the songs feel dated in any way. They're still as enjoyable and refreshing as ever. I highly recommend buying this album. I wish someone would come around and make an album similar to this so to revive today's brain-dead pop scene. An album like this one is sorely needed today.

Madonna: Madonna (1983)

Everybody knows that the 1970s was the "Happening" decade, where a lot of great solo artists and bands were out and making their music known. But all that seemed to change when the 1980s hit. Madonna was able to keep us music lovers in the game when she debuted in 1983 with her very first album, Madonna.

This album shows how fresh and new Madonna was, especially with her infamous style that included clunk jewelery and rubber bracelets. The songs on this album are nothing short of amazing and that is why this album is my first of eight favorite albums from Madonna.

LUCKY STAR

The fifth and final single from the album. The sound to this fits Madonna so perfectly, it's not even funny. The song's music video is what really made her early 80s punk style famous. The style included geri-curled blonde hair, lips made up red, tight black muscle shirts, black knee-length tight shorts, black ankle boots, clunk jewelery earrings, clunk jewelery crucifixes and chains and necklaces, clunk jewelery bracelets, and the infamous rubber bracelets.

BORDERLINE

The fourth single from the album. This is yet another incredible song. Even though it's an 80s bubblegum pop song, it's still a classic to most of us Madonna fans. The video is nothing short of a classic and was the first Madonna music video to be directed by Mary Lambert, who went on to direct many more of Madonna's videos.

BURNING UP

The second single from the album. When I first heard this, I flipped over it. The beats are incredible, the guitars are amazing, the lyrics are awesome, and Madonna sings it perfectly. Definitely a song not to miss.

I KNOW IT

Another great song that talks about knowing that her ex-boyfriend is going to desert her.

HOLIDAY

The third single from the album. This song was amazing to begin with and it fit the Madonna's sound and style of the 80s so perfectly. What made this song, in my opinion, even better was that Madonna makes a great point. You have to think that life is too short to be bitter. Life is too short to be miserable. That's why we all need a Holiday to enjoy life more.

THINK OF ME

In this awesome tune, she tells her boyfriend of how sick and tired she is of having trouble trying to communicate with him, which leads her to believe that he is think of someone else, where she then tells him, "You better think of me".

PHYSICAL ATTRACTION

This was the B-side to the "Burning Up" single, but this song was never released as a single. Let that be known to all of you. This is yet another incredible song, where, in this one, she tells the guy of her dreams they can get together, even it's for only one night, to discover that their Physical Attraction is a Chemical Reaction, if you know what I mean.

EVERYBODY

The first single from the album. Not only is this the first single from the album, it is also Madonna's very first single. The video was a low-budget video that featured Madonna in the club that started her career: Danceteria. If you watch the video, you will see that one of the male dancers in the video is Madonna's younger brother, Christopher. This is a song that is too good to miss and it will inspire Everybody to get up and dance. That's what the song is about. She tells Everybody to just get up and dance.

If you are a Madonna fan and you do not have this album, then you should get up and buy it. When you buy this album, you'll be getting the first taste of Madonna's amazing career. Buy it and I will guarantee that you will not be disappointed.

Where all started: Madonna's debut

This album is a classic, with singles as Lucky Star, Borderline, Burning Up and Everybody the world stared noticing Madonna first as a dance artist and also as a writer and producer since she help and wrote most of the songs in this album.

My personal favorite song here is the Classic HOLIDAY a feel-good song that has trandsance time and you can hear in almost all of her tours (including the re-invention tour), I would never get tired of listing this song, is one of my all-time favorites. Recommended if you are a Madonna fan, if not buy the compilations instead.
