Description: Madonna's second album was her breakthrough, thanks principally to two gimmicky hits: the sinuous "Like a Virgin," with its taboo-busting metaphor for that fresh, clean new-love feeling, and the cutesy, Betty-Boopsy "Material Girl." Most of the rest of the album, although similarly frothy, is superior to those warhorses, notably the irresistible LP tracks "Over and Over," and "Pretender"--which adds a bit of gossamer delicacy to the mandatory bounciness. "Dress You Up" is a Madonna classic, an insubstantial dance-pop delight bedecked in synthesized bells and replete to the beat with kinky suggestions. And there's a sign of greater depth to come in her cover of Rose Royce's elegiac ballad "Love Don't Live Here Anymore," a heartfelt vocal supported by a subtle, gorgeous arrangement helmed by producer Nile Rodgers and his two key Chic instrumental compatriots, Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson. --Ken Barnes

Reviews:

Madonna First Masterpiece

Even tough here 1983 self-titled debut had some hits mostly in the club areas and generated such hits as Holiday and Borderline; Like a Prayer was her very first masterpiece that gives the world an idea or what Madonna could do.

This album generated her first number one in the USA, the title track stayed 6 weeks at the top of the charts in Dec 1984. This album would have another big chart-toppers as Angel, Material Girl (with a very nice video), Love don't live here anymore and the International addition track for this album and an eventually world dance it Into the Groove.

For pop and Madonna fans only, and for anyone to wants to have a classic in their collection.

My Faves are MG, Over and Over, Angel, and Shoo, Give It A B

This is Madonna's breakthrough album that came out in 1984 selling like over 18 million copies. Material Girl is a great song about materialism, Angel is just cute and wonderful, I don't care too much for Like A Virgin, Over and Over is my favorite is very catchy and a great pop song to dance too. LDLHA is slow and dragged out, Dress Up is not too bad and Shoo-Bee-Doo has a great piano backing to it. I dont like Stay or Pretender. I recommend this for all the other songs thought. This was Madonna's 2nd album so it was a great start.

Really Cool CD

Madonna is such a great singer. Her voice is so...I can't explain it. It just sounds amazing. And this album is among my favorite Madonna albums. I love the songs she has on it. I think a lot of Madonna's earlier stuff was more her, but I still like her newer music. But it just doesn't feel like the same...well, Madonna is singing the music. I mean, compare "Like A Virgin" and "What It Feels Like For A Girl(which I love, by the way)" and you'll see what I mean.

I personally think this one of Madonna's best. Her 2nd CD. Her first # 1 album. The hit singles that came off of it (i.e. "Material Girl" and "Like A Virgin").

Well, here are my personal thoughts on each song, and I also rated them on a 1 to 5 scale...

"Material Girl" (5/5): A total classic by Madonna. The music video is pretty cool, I like the Marilyn Monroe feel to it. Anyway, what Madonna fan doesn't love this song? It's a classic!

"Angel" (5/5): This is my favorite song on the whole CD! I love the way the music sounds, and Madonna's voice on this song sounds great!!! I never get sick of this song. I don't understand why it was never a big hit.

"Like A Virgin" (5/5): How can anyone not like this song? It's sweet, bubbly, and catchy. Addictive combo. For me, once I heard the song, I was hooked on it. I love this...it's classic Madonna pop.

"Over And Over" (4/5): Ok, this song isn't one of my favorites on the CD. The lines repeat a lot, and it gets kind of annoying after awhile. But I still like the beat to the song and the positive message it gives off. If at first you don't succeed, then try again.

"Love Don't Live Here Anymore" (3.5/5): I like this song, but it's not what I'd call a song that could ever make it big. I don't know, it's just a little too slow at times. But it's still pretty decent.

"Dress You Up" (5/5): THIS SONG ROCKS!!! It is (besides "Angel") is my fave song on the CD!!!! I love the drumbeat in the background.

"Shoo-Bee-Doo" (4/5): What can I say; I'm a sucker for a good romance song. This song's lyrics are cool; it's just a little bit too mellow.

"Pretender" (5/5): Wonderful song! It has great words, music, and vocals! Why wasn't it ever a single?!?!?!?!

"Stay" (5/5): Another wonderful song that deserved to be a single!!!!

So anyway, this CD is really cool. It you're into Madonna's older stuff, I suggest you check it out.
