Fever instantly opens with a groovy dance beat and Madonna sings, "You give me...you give me fever." She then begins her first verse by singing, "Never know how much I love you, never know how much I care. When you put your arms around me, I get a fever that's so hard to bear. Listen to me baby. Hear every word I say. No one can love you the way I do, 'cause they don't know how to love you my way." Madonna's vocals are low and quiet in a spoken-like tone, and this works well considering the mood of the song. Madonna then sings her first chorus, "You give me fever, when you kiss me. Fever when you hold me tight. Fever in the morning, and fever all through the night." The second verse then begins as Madonna sings, "Sun lights up the daytime. Moon lights up the night. My eyes light up when you call my name, 'cause I know you're gonna treat me right. Bless my soul I love you, take this heart away. Take these arms I'll never use, and just believe in what my lips have to say." The second chorus then kicks in. The lyrics are brilliant, and Madonna does an excellent job of covering this old Peggy Lee classic. Madonna breathes new life into the song, and she does it very tastefully. Madonna then goes on to sing, "Romeo loved Juliet. Juliet, she felt the same. When he put his arms around her, he said Julie, baby you're my flame. He gave her fever." The second verse and chorus repeats once more, before Madonna sings "Fever. Everybody's got the fever. That is something you should know. Fever isn't such a new scene. Fever started long ago," before going on to sing, "Captain Smith and Pocahontas had a very mad affair. When her daddy tried to kill him, she said Daddy oh, don't you dare. He gave her fever with his kisses. Fever when he holds me tight. Fever, I'm his Mrs. Daddy won't you treat him right?" The song then repeats the chorus few more times before dying down and fading out as Madonna speaks, "Fever, when you kiss them. Fever, if you live and learn. Fever, 'til you sizzle. What a lovely way to burn...what a lovely way to burn...what a lovely way to burn."
The video to Fever can basically be described as red. Madonna dances around in red flames for the large part of the video, sometimes wearing nothing but leaves covering her bits. She looks quite good in the video, but it (overall) is a bit of a disappointment. It's definitely the worst video for the songs released from the Erotica album - the videos to Erotica, Deeper And Deeper, Bad Girl and Rain were much better. Still, this is a great cover-version by Madonna.
