Dress You Up begins with a rather dull and empty beat that eventually gets better as the seconds go by. Soon you have a brilliant beat that really makes you feel alive and happy. Madonna then begins her singing with the first verse, "You've got style, that's what all the girls say. Satin sheets and luxuries so fine. All your suits are custom-made in London, but I've got something that you'll really like!" Madonna's vocals are rather subdued in the first verse, but her vocals really break out in the chorus when she sings the lines, "Gonna dress you up in my love! All over, all over. Gonna dress you up in my love! All over your body." Madonna then begins her second verse. Again, her vocals are subdued, before they break out for the joyous second chorus. The second chorus is longer than the first which makes things better. We are then treated to the best part of the song - a guitar solo that really captures the euphoric mood of the song. I absolutely love this song, and the guitar just pushes my love for it even further - over the borderline, as Madonna would say! Madonna then continues singing the chorus a few more times towards the end as the backing singers become more prominent and the song fades out.
The video to Dress You Up was not a very good one. We had to put up with the performance of the song from Madonna's Virgin Tour instead of a real video. This performance is still pretty good though, and much better that the 'video' to Angel - which was just a collection of clips from Madonna's previous videos! The video shouldn't really matter, but with Madonna, videos play a big part. Overall, Dress You Up might not have been the biggest single success from the Like A Virgin album, but it was definitely my favourite song because it's just so upbeat and fun. A true Madonna classic.
