Description: Capturing the brutal majesty of Oakland metal veterans Machine Head, performers at London's Brixton Academy back in 2001, Hellalive provides a fine opportunity to take a look at the career of one of heavy rock's most underappreciated acts. While Machine Head have never been able to top their fantastic debut, 1994's Burn My Eyes, here they serve up totally blistering takes on the brooding "I’m Your God Now," the pogo thrasher "Old," and the Ministry-style jackhammer "Davidian." "The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears" carries the gruesome, thick heaviness of Pantera like a torch. And on "Crashing Around You," frontman Rob Flynn launches into a chilling spoken introduction that broadens into an anthem to the gray, dispossessed ranks of old-school heavy-metal. "I used to think I was the only weirdo in the world that has thoughts like this," he remarks. "But now I know I'm not alone." --Louis Pattison

Reviews:

Greatness

This cd is the first live cd i have ever purchased, and i must say it is great. I havent listened to Machine Head long maybe 4-5 years. This is in my opinion one of their greater cd's. I would also reccommend this to a new fan so they can truly appreciate how great Machine Head is withought all the studio equipment.

Hella Good and Hella Nor Cal.

First off I'd like to explain the title. There is a cliche in Northern California which is "I hella like Nor Cal." The reason being is that people use the word "hella" to describe things and have different uses for it such as referring to many or good. So that is where the title came from, which you many not have known if you are from outside Nor Cal. While the So Cal (Southern Californian) people have their own lingo, Nor Cal with our unsurfable beaches, cold climate, and several hours drive to the coast make fun of the dumb surfer attitude.

So let me say, "Hellalive" is Hella good. No crappy surfer style metal or surfer style punk-Blink 182 garbage. This record is packed with material throughout their career, that is played live as best sounding as a live album can from one of the best metal bands. Too bad there isn't any songs off "Through the ashes of empires," which for label reasons was not released in the United States. That "hella sucks" because it is such a good album, and did commercially well in Europe. Anyway, there is a discussion about the events and the mind frame behind the 9/11/2001 events in a spoken introduction before "Crashing around you," which I won't spoil in this review.

Despite a few disappointing records after "The More Things Change," I have got back into the swing of Machine Head. When I first bought "Burn My Eyes" in 1994 I expected great things from these guys, while "The Burning Red" and "Supercharger" made me think these guys were done, I am happy to say "Through the Ashes" and this album show a powerful rebound and new hope for what can become one of the "Hella greatest metal bands."

pleasantly surprising,but not without flaws

I wrote a review for this a while ago, but after seeing MH live I have defenitely changed my mind. The setlist on this album leaves alot to be desired, but the production is more than adequate... and songs like davidian are still the baseball bat to the face they were in 1994 on burn my eyes.

I guess my only real problem with this album, is the presence of anything from supercharger, and to a lesser extent the burning red.

This does the live show aboslutely no justice, believe me machine head are 100 times more pissed off and hungry in person than on here.

I cant change the rating, or else id give it three stars... but this is still pretty cool, like if you want to hear none but my own but dont have burn my eyes (shame on both of us)
