Description: The members of Lynyrd Skynyrd played by their own set of rules. Fiercely defensive of their Southern heritage, Ronnie Van Zant and company reflexively lashed out when they thought they'd been slurred. Hence "Sweet Home Alabama," their retort to Neil Young's shame-on-Dixie "Alabama." (Young loved Skynyrd's screed, even though it lambasted him by name.) On the other hand, "Saturday Night Special" took on handguns; it's hard to imagine a contemporary band with a redneck-rock following taking a similar pro-gun-control stand. This two-disc overview presents a band with a broader agenda than one might imagine. Yes, this is state-of-the-'70s electric boogie, but it's three-guitar-strong rock with genuine subject matter. Fans will already have the likes of "Free Bird" (here presented in studio and concert settings) and "I Know a Little," but baubles such as the previously unreleased "Comin' Home" and the rare B-side "Mr. Banker" add to this collection's appeal, as does the lengthy liner essay.

Reviews:
this is a great double cd album
this is a great double cd album. its one of the best out there. but then with lynyrd skynyrd i dont think there is a bad one anywhere. because skynyrd is that good they always have been. and they always will be. ronnie was the man. but i think johnny has done a fine job of keeping skynyrd going strong. i really like this album one of my favorites. this one would make ronnie proud. as well as cassie steve dean and allen.
Timeless classics
I've been a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd for years but just recently began to put forth any effort to buy their CDs. There are classics everybody at some point has heard on here, such as Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps, That Smell, and Free Bird just to name a few, along with a couple songs that might not have been big singles but no doubt are just as good. Lynyrd Skynyrd are one of the few bands that just never seem to get old, at any time you can pop one of their CDs in your stereo and love it now just as much as you did the first time you heard it. It's that staying power that is perfectly captured on this 2-CD set.
Quite possibly one of my favorite Skynyrd songs is Was I Right Or Wrong. In this song you experience the amazing song writing ability Ronnie Van Zant possesses. The verses are extremely quiet and the chorus is loud and gripping. A definite high-point on this collection. Comin' Home, a previously unreleased version, is also included. This song flows like no other, the verses are set to a background of catchy guitars and only gets better each time you hear it. Free Bird, arguably Skynyrd's best song, is featured both live and in the studio. The live version is performed flawlessly and, of course, has the infamous guitar solo being performed amazingly well. All I Can Do Is Write About It is another jaw-dropping song this CD offers. It's performed acousticly and Ronnie's voice is given new light in it.
Just a few of the many best songs on here are Was I Right Or Wrong, Comin' Home, Free Bird, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Back My Bullets, and All I Can Do Is Write About It. Everybody, whether you admit it or not, has a soft spot for Lynyrd Skynyrd. This is the best greatest hits collection this band has out as of now, not to mention the most complete collection of songs. Pass on the other one-disc greatest hits that are out, this is without a doubt eons better than those.
Very good, but, could have been better.
I bought this CD about 4 years ago and I still listen to it.
The remastering is very good. The instruments and vocals are
very sharp and clear, sometimes these older albums can sound
a bit "muddy" after remastering. Not this one. The only reason
I can't give it Five stars is because there are a few songs
missing. Like 'Don't Ask Me No Questions' and 'On the Hunt'
to name acouple. But all of the other songs certainly belong.
My recomendation is, if I lost it or it got damaged, I would
buy it again in a heartbeat. Ted
