Description: Nine of the 17 tracks on this historical curio surfaced on the 1978 LP Skynyrd's First and... Last, but more than a quarter of a century passed between the 1971/'72 sessions that produced these germinating tracks and their full appearance. Skynyrd's First: The Muscle Shoals Album documents a group of young musicians finding their footing, but by no means is it an amateurish affair. While ongoing personnel shifts are in evidence (only Ronnie Van Zant, Albert Collins, and Gary Rossington from the classic lineup appear throughout), the playing and writing is surprisingly tight. It's easy to see why veteran session man Jimmy Johnson, the producer of the sessions, insisted: "I had never heard a band that were that well rehearsed and had their songs together." The excellent liner notes make this package all the more appealing to Lynyrd loyalists. --Steven Stolder

Reviews:

Awesome Rare Skynyrd Tracks!

I don't own this album, but from what I can hear from the previews, it sounds amazing! I think that before Al Kooper met the band and added all sorts of keyboard arrangements to the songs, there was a nicer, more raw sound to the music, and this album definately portrays that sound beautifully. If I could own this album, I would, it sounds amazing! If you are a true skynyrd fan, or even just wanting to get into their music for the first time, this is the perfect album for you! BUY IT NOW!!

Great Drafts of Classic Hits

If you're a collector of Southern Rock and enjoy early versions of songs that became huge hits, then don't pass this one up. I have every Skynyrd LP, plus the original version of this album, but this album has songs on it that aren't even close to anything on the other albums. "White Dove," a Rickey Medlocke tune on this album, is hillarious to listen to, just because it sounds so unlike Skynyrd. He sings with a high falsetto, sort of like sixties bubble gum rock.
