Description: To this day, it's "buyer beware" when it comes to the music of Little Richard, who rerecorded most of his late-'50s rock classics numerous times after leaving his original label, Specialty Records (following a brief return), in 1964. Not that some of the other recordings don't have merit, but the Specialty versions are the ones that helped shape rock & roll. This three-disc box set includes everything the artist recorded for the label, which means the hits in addition to alternate takes and just plain nonhits. Historians will find this collection (including several songs in development) fascinating, but more frugal fans may find five versions of "Slippin' and Slidin'" excessive. If that's the case, check out either
The Georgia Peach or
The Essential..., both more condensed Specialty collections.

Reviews:
Simply Awesome!
Little Richard is one of the most important figures in the history of rock music, if not the most important. Original, unique, a force of nature. We will never see someone like him again. This boxed set contains his best works, it essential for any fan of real rock n roll. I count myself privelleged as having had the honor of seeing the man perform live. Even though he was well into his sixties, it is still the best concert I have ever seen. Elvis may be considered the King, but Richard Penniman is right up there with him. This collection is the greatest testament to the majesty of Little Richard. Get it!
Superb
There are certainly some box sets that go on way too long--primarily with the outtakes and alternate versions; the Jerry Lee Lewis box issued by Bear is the prime example of this--but this is not the case here. Yes there are 4 versions of Slippin' and Slidin' but for the most part the partial versions, the false starts, etc. are intersting and really don't seem to impeed the flow of the collection. This is not a 10-CD box. This is 3 CDs of great music. A lot of box sets talk about how you can see the development of the artist or the genre. This is about the only collection of the period that the development is evident and interesting. Listening to the CDs in sequence definetly gives you a great impression of what Little Richard was discovering and developing. Few artists could deliver rockers and ballads so convincingly. This set is well worth your time and money.
More Little RIchard than we need.
Box Sets are quite often for not the typical fan of a genre, or the fan of a particular artist. They are often for someone who wants to get much further into a body of work.
For that reason, this set may not be the place to go for Little Richard. It has three (maybe four) versions of "Slippin and-a Slidin", several versions of "Ready Teddy", "Long Tall Sally" and several others.
This is by no means a dig at Richard Penniman himself. He was the originator, and did things no one was even contemplating back in his day. I would recommend going with a fantastic single disc sold by Amazon, "The Essential Little Richard". It has everything that Uncle John needs.
