Description: An album that defines virtually everything that is right about adult contemporary pop--and yes, there are a few things--Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind contains lush, orchestrated arrangements of songs by first-rate tunesmiths such as Jimmy Webb, Eric Kaz, Paul Carrack, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, Isaac Hayes, and Karla Bonoff. Four cuts, including the Grammy-winning "Don't Know Much," feature duets between Ronstadt (still singing with power and assurance even at the top of her range) and angel-voiced Aaron Neville. Other highlights include "Adios," with multitracked background vocals by Brian Wilson, and the title song, which is driven to new heights by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. Beautiful stuff. --Daniel Durchholz

Reviews:

Another collection-item for Baywatch-fans !

Also for Baywatch-fans this CD from Linda Ronstadt

is a worth recommendation to their collection.

The CD contains one beautifull title "Goodbye my

friend" that was used for the Baywatch-episode

"Shark Derby" (1989). Lindas voices, though

very sentimental, sings when the last pictures

appear from actress Shawn Weatherley.

If you are interested in songs that featured

on Baywatch, you can buy here on Amazon.com the Book: "Baywatch - Rescued from Prime Time". This book contains all credits from songs/artists (like Linda Ronstadt),

that you can buy here on Amazon.com

I have added four stars only, because the sound could

have been recorded a little louder.

Don't know much but I know I love this CD

This album was released in 1989, her first studio album of non American songbook songs or Spanish songs, since 1982's GET CLOSER album. In those 7 years she released 3 albums of songs from the American Songbook with Nelson Riddle, and a few Spanish albums. This album was quite successful for Linda, and spun off a few hits, not to mention the accolades she received for the project.

The album is produced by Peter Asher. There are a number of songs with Aaron Neville, and the two compliment each other well. The big hits from the album with him were "All My Life" and "Don't Know Much". "Adios" was also a solo hit for her. The first track, "Still Within The Sound Of My Voice" is a beautiful ballad with a great arrangement, that shows Linda's strong vocals. The title track is another winner, a great inspirational ballad. Another notable ballad is the album closer "Goodbye My Friend", very poignant and sad at the same time.

Overall a strong album, and good comeback, for Linda Ronstadt with this release.

Sonic genius. Cries out for an SACD or DVD-Audio Release

Other reviews on this site have focused on the quality of these songs and Ms. Ronstadt's performance. What they may have missed is the high quality of this recording, done at her then boyfriend George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, CA. The sound on this release is stunning and should be a natural for a super audio CD or DVD-Audio release. The lush orchestrations, Ms. Ronstadt and guest Aaron Neville would sound that much better in high-resolution audio. If the results of this album are any indication, then recording an album at Lucas's studios results in state of the art, audiophile sound.
