Description: On Spit, Kittie's 1999 debut, the just-out-of-high-school all-female quartet were an anomaly, giving the male-dominated metal scene a run for its money thanks to the Canadian lineup's near death-metal heaviness. On sophomore outing Oracle, minus original guitarist Fallon Bowman, Kittie rock harder than ever, yet lack the memorable songs required from a band of any gender or genre. In songs like "Mouthful of Poison," Morgan Lander's often ethereal, decidedly feminine vocals contrast with bassist Talena Atfield's death-metal growls. That, along with ferocious double-bass drums and extreme aggression, are the band's hallmarks, broken up by a Kittie-ized cover of Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell" and "Safe," a spare, spooky and excellent departure in a sea of heavy sameness. Ultimately, Oracle's most redeeming quality is that of a role model for frustrated teenage girls, proving that, indeed, women are allowed to vent their rage and compete with men on the same playing field. --Katherine Turman

Reviews:

Kittie's Best Album

This band really improved. "Spit" was an O.K. record, but this is less watered down. The songs are slower and easier to follow along. This is why I don't listen to most death metal. You can't follow along with it. Morgan Lander is a great vocalist, much better than that Tairrie B. b**ch from My Ruin. (She was a hell of a lot better in Tura Satana.) "What I Always Wanted" is my favorite track. Slow, brutal and definitely worth a listen. "Run Like Hell" is a cover from one of the gayest bands ever, Pink Floyd, but Kittie can do it a hell of a lot better. Take all your Avril Lavigne, Evanescence and Liz Phair albums and destroy them or sell them. This band is worth listening to, whether you're a male or a female.

Not Bad

I hate the death metal stuffo n here, it's not even real death metal, it's just gutteral moosh and noise! They do a few good songs on here, Run LIke Hell is an okay cover, but come on! It's very hard to cover a Floyd song! What I Always Wanted and In Winter are the best only because she doesn't sound like she wants to kick my ass but instead annoys me. For chick rock and beautiful vocals (guy or girl) it doesn't matter, Morgan can sing! She really needs to stick to it, i hope she does. I recommend Jack Off Jill instead, i only bought Kittie cause our crappy record stores never have anything. Jessika in jack Off Jill is more beautiful in terms of vocal talent, but this is an okay album, buy it if you like beautiful possibly poetic nu metal, and no, nu metal is not a bad thing, i like it.

worst album ive ever heard

i try to be open minded when it comes to metal even though i pretty much dont expect anything good to come out of todays metal scene. but this is just pointless and terrible. i thought slipknot sucked. im trying not to mention the fact that i hate it when b*tches invade male dominant music bc they wanna do everything we do. im not sexist, but that bugs me. not taking that into account, this album still sucks d*ck. the problem with todays metal is most of the time a band plays two or three chords over an entire song while spitting out some sh*tty talentless vocals. kitties no differnt, but worse. i mean good God, this album is just so pointless i cant stand it. heres a song by song review: all 11 songs are one or two distorted chords ringing throughout the entire song with some terrible drumming and screaming-til-u-puke vocals. God, there are just no words to accurately express my hatred for this pile of bullsh*t. it just goes to show you how far down the sh*tter metal has come. gone are the days of master of puppets, peace sells, reign in blood, and powerslave. welcome to the year 2005, population: poser kids listeing to sh*t metal who have no clue what a guitar solo is, or just how talentless their favorite band is. rock is dead...RIP
