Description: It's hard to say what adds more ballast to singer Kelly Rowland's solo debut,
Simply Deep--her chart-topping past with Destiny's Child or her insanely sexy duet (and accompanying video) with hip-hop star Nelly on the song "Dilemma." For certain, Rowland will take her place alongside fellow Destiny's Child member Beyonce Knowles as a hip, self-assured R&B force with a terrifically elastic voice, if not groundbreaking material. A slick, mostly upbeat clutch of smoochy urban ballads and he-done-me-wrong laments,
Simply Deep sounds expensive and Cristal-soaked, which was doubtless the goal. And there are notable exceptions--"Love/Hate" is a electronically juiced rump-shaker while the poignant album opener, "Stole," stands as a beacon to the underdog, delivered in a voice as striking as the face it belongs to, which is saying something.

Reviews:
"Dangerously In Love" is the one getting airplay?
I'm honestly suprised that Beyonce's solo album was the one getting awards and airplay. Yet, Kelly Rowland was shut out completly.
First, I know Kelly Rowland, and I know that she can do MUCH better than this. But, yeah, it's not her fault. She wasn't getting ANY material or help from her manager (a.k.a. Beyonce's father), so really all she had to work with was Joe Budden, because that's the only person she knew. And, of course, Beyonce's father just HAS TO include Solange to start her career. It just seems Beyonce's father wasn't even giving Kelly a fair chance.
Secondly, there still are some good songs on this CD. I lovethe song "Stole". "Dilemma" was the only #1 hit from this album (read above), mainly because Nelly's manager is nice and gives him good material. "Train on a Track" is another good song.
Ok, there's not much to listen to. I do look forward of Kelly making another solo debut. But hopefully, she'll be able to by having a fair chance and getting more producers besides Solange and Joe Budden.
Should Of Been Better
Three of four good songs out of fourteen is not a good album. This could of been better, take out the album fillers and put in more songs like "Have i Told You" and "Obsession" and you have a bangin CD for Kelly. I think in all the album is listenable ..It can be thrown on an just listened to but not a favorite. I think its not the end for her as a solo artist. If the next one she makes is better..then she is all good.. Its good enough
Simply Deep
I bought this disc about two years ago and listened to it for the first time with a friend who knew a little about Destiny's Child but wasn't a real fan. I played HEAVEN and his comment was "Oh, Beyonce's got a new song out?". That kind of sums up one of the problems with Kelly's vocals - on some songs, she sounds exactly like Beyonce & the vocal production on some songs sounds like it's Destiny's Child singing, not Kelly on her own. I realize that she & Bee grew up together, singing together, getting vocal training together which accounts for the similarities in their vocal stylings but Kelly can really sing and sounds much better without the ridiculous runs she attempts on some songs.
The disc overall is a very good debut from her - I agree with some comments that in comparison to Bee's debut, Kelly's is superior in song selection but is less flashy than Bee's and got almost zero promotion in the US. I only recall seeing Kelly perform once with Nelly and she was horribly nervous and did not perform well - she lacks confidence on her own and seems like a different performer in the group. Hopefully if DC is truly over, she will realize that SHE is also a star, a talented singer and can command the spotlight just like Bee BUT she has to believe it in order for it to be so.
The standout songs to me are: HEAVEN, EVERYTIME YOU WALK OUT THE DOOR, CAN'T NOBODY, TRAIN ON A TRACK, STOLE, HAVEN'T TOLD YOU, LOVE/HATE & SIMPLY DEEP.
I'd recommend the disc to fans/non-fans alike who are curious about what she'd sound like on her own. It has a good balance of ballads/mid-tempo grooves and up-tempo dance tracks.
I too, hope that Kelly wakes up and seeks new management so that she can shine away from the shadow of the Knowles clan because she truly deserves another chance to prove herself as a solo artist.
