Description: John Lennon's solo work has been anthologized so many times that it's hard to believe there wasn't a definitive compilation before this one. And, depending on your particular take, you might not find Lennon Legend quite hitting the mark. However, since it does contain the brilliantly scathing "Working Class Hero," doesn't ignore the woefully underrated Rock 'n' Roll album, and catches the hopeful renewal that came toward the end of his foreshortened life, it's probably about as close as anyone's going to come. His great songs shine, meditations like "Imagine" and his rockers had form and content, as in "Whatever Gets You Through the Night." He was an icon, and this does him justice. --Chris Nickson

Reviews:

A Great Collection Of John Lennon's Best

If you want to own every one of John Lennon's best songs as an ex-Beatle, this album is perfect. From "Imagine" to "Jealous Guy" to "Instant Karma!" to the great cover of "Stand By Me" to "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" to "Mind Games" and "Give Peace A Chance" this is wall to wall John Lennon at his best. A great taste of what John Lennon was about and a must for any Beatles fan. It is what "Wingspan" is to Paul McCartney and "All Things Must Pass" (though not a "greatest hits" album)is to George Harrison.

Good compilation

Though he was best known as the Beatles rhythm guitarist, John Lennon had an amazing solo career that is often overlooked by Beatles fans. And, like any famous rock star, there have been MANY Lennon compilations to date, but none that covered his entire solo career, from the late sixties to his death. Finally, we have one that does just that. Read on for my review of Lennon Legend - The Very Best Of John Lennon.

PROS:
Let's face the facts. If you're a die-hard Beatles fan who is only a casual fan of the former members' solo material, you probably just want Lennon's biggest solo hit, Imagine. Needless to say, you'll find that here. And don't forget his other big solo hits. Instant Karma! is another masterpiece. Power To The People, which has been featured in a plethora of TV shows, commercials, and movies, is also here. If there's one of Lennon's solo hits that tends to go overlooked, it's Cold Turkey. When you're listening to this CD, DO NOT SKIP IT! And of course, there's all the other big hits - Nobody Told Me, Happy Xmas (War Is Over), and all the rest. No casual fan of Lennon's solo material should be disappointed with this.

CONS:
I have only two complaints with this compilation. First, the songs are not in original release order. Second is that Mother is a single edit (many hits compilations put single edits on instead of the full-length versions so they can squeeze more tracks in.)

OVERALL:
THIS IS THE BEST SINGLE-DISC COMPILATION OF JOHN LENNON SOLO MATERIAL OUT THERE. If you get one, make it this one.

Imagine...

If everyone in the world listened to the song Imagine every day, then there would be peace on earth!

"If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace." - John Lennon

Not his best!

The John Lennon "Imagine" soundtrack is a much better collection of songs than this CD. It includes more of his work with The Beatles . How could any Lennon hits package not include "Strawberry Fields"? That song is just simply one of his best songs ever written!

Truly the Best of John Lennon

This CD takes you from John's solo years on Apple Records to the Double Fantasy era. Without a doubt, this is truly a greatest hits collection from one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century. Once you listen to this CD, you will immediately see why John Lennon was the lyrical genius behind the Beatles.

As for the songs themselves; well, what can I say?. . . .You've heard them many times before. However, this CD gives you the chance to own all of John's greatest hits on one CD.

Another plus for this CD. . . it doesn't venture back to the days when John was a Beatle to add some of his Beatle compositions on this CD. No, you're not going to get Revolution, In My Life, Help, or any of John's other Beatle compositions. This CD is purely John Lennon; as a solo artist. Also, this CD gives you a perspective of John's life from the days the Beatles became legend to his Dakota years.

The sound quality of this CD is outstanding. John's voice and the instrumentation never sounded better.

This CD is definitely a plus to any audio collection.
