Reviews:

excellent stuff

A turnaround in Cocker's career. Definitely worthwhile checking out. While some may find it polished, the style is never too slick, but tightly controlled and right on the mark. Special mention for the excellent Sly and Robbie rythm tandem. Get it!

Fantastic Singer, Great Songs, Wrong Band

Joe Cocker was having a difficult time getting a record contract during the early 80's, and that may be the reason he was forced to use Chris Blackwell's studio musicians instead of his fantastic touring band at the time -- including the late great B.J. Wlson (of Procol Harum) on drums and incredible guitarist Cliff Goodwin. I've heard Live tapes of most of the songs on this album, and they put the recorded versions to shame. Ruby Lee, especially, boasts one of the greatest guitar solos (by Goodwin) that I've ever heard. The cold, mechanical sounding rhythm section and uninteresting instrumental work on this album are the reasons for the lack of excitement. I hope Joe Cocker will listen again to the Live versions of these songs, realize their great value, and have them released on CD someday. In the meantime, this wonderful band can only be heard on one CD -- "Live in New York," thankfully available here at amazon.com.

Sheffield Steel

This is one of the best albums ever produced! Why you ask? The voice of Joe Cocker is perfectly balanced with the background music to create a totally enjoyable experience. There are unusual and different sounds created here. One must listen without interruptions to feel and hear the impact.

I am not even a die-hard Joe Cocker fan, yet I found myself mesmerized by the supporting cast of musicians. Subtle nuances of organ, bass, electric guitar and background vocals makes this a repeat listening pleasure.

This album is over a decade old but sets the standard in my mind for beautifully mixed lyric's and music blended to perfection.

I have a vinyl copy and have been looking for a CD copy that will carry me forward for years of listening pleasure. My vinyl version is quite scratched but still an evening of delight. Seriously this album is a MUST listen, it is timeless and near perfection!

If this group of musicians/producers has produced anything else I would love to hear.
