Decent Compilation, but not the best
The main purpose of South Saturn Delta is to give fans previously unreleased or long out-of-print songs. This is a good idea, but the actual quality of the songs on here isn't very good. Many are mediocre jams or rough drafts of songs. But there are some highlights, for sure. The most interesting song on the compilation is the title track, which gives incredible insight into Jimi's combination of blues, jazz, rock and R&B, as pointed out in the CD's accompanying booklet. Also well worth noting is the closing track "Midnight Lightning", where Jimi pays homage to his blues heros. One of the most promising songs here, "Sweet Angel", begins with the music already in progress. The complete version can be found on the 2000 4-cd box set "The Jimi Hendrix Experience." And, ultimately, the box set is a MUCH better buy than this, despite the big price difference. The box set has random lost Hendrix songs that are actually VERY high in quality, and unforgettable, unlike a lot of the tunes on SSD. If you're a Hendrix fan, you should be willing to make that purchase.
indispensable for hardcore Jimi fans
I agree with many reviewers about the spotty quality of a lot of material. Neophytes would do better to get the stuff he released in his lifetime, plus First Rays of New Rising Sun.
My main reason for buying this was to get some of the tracks previously available on Rainbow Bridge and War Heroes, particularly Tax Free and Pali Gap. Those two tracks, along with the title track, "South Saturn Delta", give a slight hint at what Jimi might have done next, had he lived. For 1971 Jimi was scheduled to record with Gil Evans and with Rahsaan Roland Kirk. What would those sessions have sounded like???? He also allegedly did some jam sessions with Miles and with Sam Rivers. I'm convinced that Jimi had not reached his creative peak when he died so prematurely. Sadly we'll never know, but this collection does give you a slight glimpse, and for that it's valuable.
Jimi Hendrix
Hey,this album is so good! You can listen to many never-heard-songs! But I care about the difference between singl version of "All alongthe watchtower" and this album's one. The difference
is almost nothing!
Rerelease Rainbow Bridge
Great record, as is First Rays, but a better album was the original vinyl Rainbow Bridge, with the best songs from both these CDs, and an unbelievable version of Hear My Train a Comin'. It was the first LP I ever bought, and still my favorite record, Hendrix or otherwise. I'll just have to try and recreate it on CD, if I can find that Hear My Train take...
